Dear asker,

You already seem to have read all books and made your decision. However, let me make some comments about those leaders' differences;

- Churcill had always the support of his own nation. What about Ataturk? He always had to deal with reactionists who brainlessly believe in that laicism is the same with atheism. What a pity that such loser people who I dont call them as Turkish still live in Turkiye.

- Ataturk has been subsequently the commander of Turks in the First World War in which Turks lost. However, Turks were only the nation gained their freedom in their own liberation war by Ataturk, even they had lost World War I. Despite of all handicaps and its very wide geopolitical position, despite of the battles in 3 fronts against at least 7 nations and despite losing the big war, Turks couldnt have been assimilated by traitor Ottoman government's treaties signed by force. Guess who returned Turks back from this hard situation?

- Also, we shouldnt forget Gelibolu battles in which Ataturk caused a soul to reborn a nation by heroic fights of soldiers in desperate situations. I dont think Churchill had to live such hard times.

- Ataturk was not only a big commander and a statesman, but also he was maybe the best revolutioner in the world; he brought laicism removing caliphate and brought democracy removing sultanate. Also, revolutions like latin alphabet and election for women, was all thanks to him. Please read; some of todays' democracy remarkers in Europa who try to seem like that they invented democracy and trying to teach Turks the democracy, has not had such revolutions in their countries like election for women in those times.

- There are many things to write about Ataturk with his several qualities. However, I am just gonna finish my answer with his words about Canakkale Gelibolu Battle in which hundreds of thousands people died;

" Those heroes from England, France, Australia, New Zealand and India who shed their blood and lost their lives...!
You are now lying in the soul of a friendly country, therefore rest in peace.
There is no differences between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours...
You, the mothers who sent their sons from far away countries,
wipe away your tears.
Your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land, they have become our sons as well."
ATATURK, 1934

Atatürk for Turkey and the Turks and Churchill for Britain and the British... I doubt that they had been successful if they had to switch jobs. Same for Gandhi for India and Indians...

I don't see an Atatürk working for Britain and the British or a Churchill for Turkey and the Turkish.

greybeard
They were both "men of their time" they rose to the occasion, but in today's world, who knows?

There is no comparison. Churchill provided a great leadership to Britain during the world war days. I personally like both of them. I like Ataturk for the secular fabric that he provided for Turkey, even though Turkey these days seems to be dithering somewhat from the path that Ataturk chalked out for the country.

Ataturk won one battle against the British. The British won the first world war and took most of the Ottoman empire ,they occupied Istanbul until 1923 when they decided to leave.Ataturk was a great leader for Turkey but Churchill was a prime mover and world figure in two world wars and looked upon as a saviour of his country and vast expanses of the world at large.

♥Barış Awareness♥
There both the same. Both
were great to the people
they led...I am an American
and say Abraham Lincoln was
better then both of them...
Ya catch my drift..
ADD:) On the otherhand if
I had to make such a
choice, I would
have to approach it
logically , and compare
their accomplishments..
Of course, the greater
of the these two would be
Churchill. He was well known
through out the world, and he not
only touched the people he
led but the entire world...
Ataturk only effected those
of his own country...
After all when you ask someone
non-Turkish today to
name a great leader
most often you'll hear the
name Churchill,
never Ataturk.. You'll even
hear Abraham Lincoln's
name before one will say
the name Ataturk...

Ataturk is the greatest person that i know in the history.
The end.

I would not compare them because they both did good for their country at different times and different situations The only common thing is that they both had the backing of United States and French. Ataturk also had the help from the British and gave Turkey Istanbul (Constantinople). This happened because the allies did not want the Bolsheviks to have access to Mediterranean in order to prevent Russian Communists present to the area and since Greeks were the same religion as Russians it was better to help Ataturk who was the choice of the British admiral Calthortpe who found a Turkish leader who was sympathetic to the Western allies ideas.

Trotsky is it true you have 15% Yunan (Greek) Blood? You know that makes you respectable!

nakis
of course churcill. attaturk for me is one nothing. he do not offer to me anything but he organize 2 genocides but churcill won nazi..

luckyman
churchill posed with a cigar all the time to proove he s a tuff man.but you wouldnt be a tuff man ruling the royal army from thousands of km away with a cigar in the mouth certainly not a good exaple for the youth.
Ataturk was on the battle field.Risking a bullet on the watch.

Soo you deceide buddy.

during the WW1, churchill was insisting that British navy can pass the dardanelles and he ordered to send British navy to dardanelles, but Ataturk was the commander of the Turkish army at dardanelles war and Ataturk's army won the dardanelles war by the limited military power against the British army.

it shows that Ataturk had a better military inteligence.

and after WW1 ottoman empire collapsed, Ataturk organized the Turkish independent movement against the imperialist powers and won the war against them. he created a modern nation from a backward muslim community and established a secular democratic republic from the remnants of ottoman empire.

Winston Churchill was a great leader but Mustafa Kemal Ataturk made a miracle in my opinion.

TURKISH
MUSTAFA KEMAL ATATURK IS THE GREAT LEADER OF THE WORLD.
HE DEFEATED WISTON CHURCHILL IN FIRST WOLD WAR ALSO...

He was a soldier,he was a politician,he was a poet,he was a teacher...

But our new generation doesn't understand his value...

Thanks for the question my dear friend!

Keyser

Churchcill was a great leader indeed, but Ataturk just did to much for his country to be second to Winston.

As for Lincoln being a great leader,he was.Maybe liberal turks should take a page out of his book when it comes to the kurdish problem. He rejected the notion of social equality of the races, and held to the view that blacks should be resettled abroad. As President, he supported projects to remove blacks from the United States.

Kurds in turkey isnt working, kurds want thier own state, lets give it to them outside turkish borders.

I never liked Churchill, he was too ambitious and an anti-communist. No different than a little senator McCarthy, his success in WWII, which was actually of mere chance rather than any skill on his part, should not cloud over his failure in WWI.

So, without a doubt, it's Atatürk who did so many great things to free us.

@Naki: According to the new yahoo answers guidelines, it is forbidden for people having more than 15% Greek blood to have access to Turkey/Travel. (Inspired by a similar guideline concerning the freedom of answering in Greece/Travel)

Please take your luggage at the door and save your wailings. I wish you a pleasant flight to Greece/Travel. (No, not a plane, it's a catapult)
