there is no ''greatest ever'' when it comes to people. you can NEVER be THE greatest. anyway.

don't they have constantinos karatheodoris, EINSTEINS' teacher? aww, disappointment...

i vote for papanikolaou, millions of women have been and will be saved by his test ; and aristotle, my favourite philosopher out of his teacher and his teacher's teacher (although socrates was thought to be the wisest person of his years, i do not agree with most of his philosophies).
and, i have not achieved more than eleftherios venizelos by any means (yet, haha), but i don't agree with his politics; he knew what the foreigners would do to the greeks, he saw it, but still supported the english. yes, the english saved us (sarcasm)! i would never vote for him as one of the greatest, although everyone must disagree with me.

THOMAS K
I voted for Socrates, not because I feel capable of evaluating men of such greatness (Karamanlis Venizelos and Kapodistrias excluded as non great to my opinion), but because I believe that mankind itself has distinguished him through a process that lasted Millenniums as THE man that changed the way of thinking of humans for ever.
I'm sure that Alexander the Great will be the winner because of the attention the name dispute caused, a bit unfair really. The triumph of the achievements of a conqueror (a great one but still a conqueror) over Science, Democracy and Philosophical thinking, sends a wrong message about our priorities.
I agree about Karatheodoris, he should definitely be among the ten.

ahhh so hard to choose...alexander the great maybe?

sandman
Alexander the Great, he made greece famous all over the world

Eric
ALEXANDER THE GREAT. THE GREATEST GREEK EVER.

Without Alexander there wasn't going to be European and Western civilization. Everything about the Ancients was going to be forgotten.

King Leonidas. After all, this is sparta.

This is a little difficult and awkward since we compare people of different professions and contributions, like a doctor against a politician, a philosopher, and a military general.

It is like asking which food is better, fruits, vegetables, sweets, etc.

If anything, this poll will indicate also which profession people value most or see as most influential with the greatest impact in our lives.... My guess is that it will be a political person, Alexander the Great or Eleftherios Venizelos, for ancient and modern Greece respectively.

If I could vote for all of them, then I would.

Now,I ll just rank them in an order.
Papanikolaou
Aristotle
Socrates
Pericles
Alexander the Great
Kolokotronis
Kapodistrias
Karamanlis

I withdraw Venizelos from the least. He is not a that "great" at all...

Don't pay attention to Slavs, please. They are usually "futronoun ekei pou den tous spernoun"

Socrates, beyond any doubt!
Learning at school about his philosophy and tragic end really 'stambed' my personality, many decades after that, I feel the same way.
He was really a 'Christian before Christ', an extraordinary man, a unique personality, somebody truely wise.

And thank you so much you reminded us the 'competition'.

Vasiliki-Βασιλική
I vote for Papanikolaou George.

What he contributed is much more important than any of the others did.

Philisphy or history are important, but whats more valuable than health?

PERICLES.

Democracy is probably the best thing Greeks have ever given our society. Here's Pericle's speech describing democracy:

"Our form of government is called a democracy because it does not imitate the laws of neighboring states. On the contrary, we are rather a model to others.
Our form of government is called a democracy because its administration is in the hands, not of a few, but of the whole people. In the settling of private disputes, everyone is equal before the law.
Election to public office is made on the basis of ability, not on the basis of membership to a particular class. No man is kept out of public office by the obscurity of his social standing because of his poverty, as long as he wishes to be of service to the state.
And not only in our public life are we free and open, but a sense of freedom regulates our day-to-day life with each other. We do not flare up in anger at our neighbor if he does what he likes. And we do not show the kind of silent disapproval that causes pain in others, even though it is not a direct accusation.
In our private affairs, then, we are tolerant and avoid giving offense. But in public affairs, we take great care not to break law because of the deep respect we have for them.
We give obedience to the men who hold public office from year to year. And we pay special regard to those laws that are for the protection of the oppressed and to all the unwritten laws that we know bring disgrace upon the transgressor when they are broken. "

Min Tous Kiklous Terates
Kolokotronis... Theodore.... who else..he was a real hero...although ..you have to say kapodistra.. did he share in his way ,,but kolotronis.... was what the klefti&arrmatoli, was all about..the reall spirit of greeks..

Φέτα Cheese in Love with Greece
Socrates is my answer. Because I believe in wise men more then in warriors or any other men in fact.

You can't decide whose answer you want, btw. First of all cos you're not Greek either, so why wouldn't anyone else answer if you can ask?! In case you forgot, this is a FREE forum and your word is irrelevant.
Thank you for your attention.

No one.
I refuse to take part in a procedure where people included in the 100 greatest Greeks are Thodoris Zagorakis, Georgios Papadopoulos, Lakis Lazopoulos, or King Othon who was not even Greek! This choice of people shows just who are famous among the large uneducated masses. I have no problem with Zagorakis, very nice chap, but a just a footballer. Where are the scientists - apart from G. Papanikolaou, really great, but not the only one? No one knows them.
If I were to vote, though, I would vote for alexander, because thanks to him the Greek culture spread and it was the reason why humanism, science, art, philosophy and rational thinking -which at the time was confined to the Greek world - spread and therefore managed to survive and create Rennaissance and modern European values. And these facts are uncontroversial, even if our neighbours don't agree with teh origin of Alexander, teh culture and language he spread was the Greek one (makes you wonder why he swould spread a culture foreign to his own!sic. I didn't see the British spreading the... French language and culture in their Commonwealth!!)

@Vasiliki, health is definitely NOT more important than philosophy, art and science. because the latter stay and make civilisation progress forever. Prolonging the life of an individual for a few years is great, but in the big picture a person dying a few years earlier or later is not such a big deal for humanity as a whole! It doesn't make such a big difference in the world, although it makes a big difference for the individual and her family.

Kiro
what? homopoulos didn't made it in the list?

This is completely crap. If modern Greeks are completely uneducated about the past, how could they vote for such a thing? Papanikolaou above Aristotle and maybe why-not Lazopoulos above Aristophanes. Meanwhile it seems that Great Greeks end around the Byzantium era and reappear around the Greek revolution. I laugh at this poll but even more at the inspirators of it.
