Why Ohrid (Macedonia) is called the second Jerusalaem?

Show all answers

MaCeDonIan PhaLanX
Inded it is!
What is Jerusalaem or Yerushalayim for Israelis and Jews, that's Ohrid for Macedonians and most of the slavic nations (Russians, Serbs, Bulgarians...)!
Ohrid is notable for having 365 churches, one for each day of the year! It has been for ages one of the most spirutal and magnifecent places in Macedonia, because on this land of God, many holly people preached as St. Pavle, St. Kliment and St.Naum.
To all illiterate users as I mentiod upper Jews and Israels calls Jerusalem - Jerusalaem or Yerushalayim!
Meybe we are not the choosen people, but Israel and Macedonia are the only two countires in the world called: Holly Lands!
Israeli Pride Hag Sameah and "L’shana ha’ba-ah b’Yerushalayim".

I don't have anything to add because some of the people above answer your question already.

I'm just wondering why the Greek people gave thumbs down to the wonderful answers above. The people just telling the facts.

OLYMPIA
The cultural, spiritual, historian, religios and above holly meaning of Ohrid! For centeris this city is centar of the Ortodox christianity! My fellow macedonians write it well!
And about the other trolls, don't bother at all! See some of them even don't know what to answer, so they start with their long bla bla insullting tone! Just ignore them!
Best wishes to Israel

I'm Macedonian!!!
because of it's cultural and spiritual meening... It is a place of 365 churches, one for every day of the year, place where the Christianity was first introduced in Europe, place of the first (Slavic) University in Europe.. the most amazing place on earth!

Perichko gave you the main reasons for that name of Ohrid.
I can only invite all the good people there to come and visit my beautiful city and to feel the positive energy in it.
Welcome to Ohrid, Macedonia!

Edit:
Why the greeks are answering this question when they know nothing at all about that? Even it is not asked in "their" section!
And yes, Macedonia and Israel are the only countryes mentioned in the Bible!

Frankly, I was not aware of Ohrid being called the second Jerusalem. However, there are a number of historical or "traditional-historical" facts that may give a reason for it:

a) In his journey to Rome, the Apostle St. Paul spent several months in Ohrid teaching and spreading the word on Christ.

b) After the Roman Empire was divided into the Western and Eastern (Byzantine) Empires, Ohrid joined the Byzantine one and during centuries it remained as a major religious metropolis for christian Slavs.

c) The city, with 365 churches and an "archbishopric seat" since the 10th century, is regarded as "the Christianity center for Slavs".

Hope this helps.
Cheers

Ohrid is called "the second Jerusalem" or "the Slavic Jerusalem" since the middle ages.
The famous Ottoman traveller Evliya Çelebi reported in his journals that Ohrid had 365 churches, each for every day of the year.

Honestly this is the first time I've heard this. Where did you hear that Ohrid (in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) is called the second Jerusalem?

By the way, it's a bit odd that an Israeli person can't spell Jerusalem. But then again maybe I'm being too suspicious
