Asuman:
Turkish is not a great language.... You didn't have to exaggerate.. What is the evidence that it is a great language? How many people or how many nations speak Turkish? Why always Turkish people are ready to attack without realizing the truth? Di didn't mean anything bad towards the Turk that they don't speak English, but just wondering. If any one carefully read, he/she can realize what did she mean, but smile, this is Turkey and these are its people.
Hanibal:
You are not funny dear, so please stop your silly jokes, and by the way it is called polar bears not polar beers, so I think that Di is right.

To the one above: ho ho ho ho.. what a funny Asuman you are? You are talking about a language spoken by about 73 million native? What do you say about English spoken by about 375 million? Spanish spoken as a first language by about 330 million people and as a second language by perhaps another 50 million? Should they be nonsence languages or great ones?

English is an official spoken language in: Anguilla, Antigua, Bahamas, Barbados, Belau, Bermuda, Botswana, British Indian Ocean Territory, British Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Antigua, Australia, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Bhutan, Botswana, British Virgin Islands, Brunei, Cameroon, Cook Islands, Dominica, Ethiopia, Falkland Islands, Fiji, Gambia, Ghana, Gibraltar, Grenada, Guam, Guyana, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Jamaica, Jersey, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Malaysia, Malta, Marshall Islands, Mauritius, Micronesia, Midway Islands, Montserrat, Namibia, Nauru, Nepal, New Zealand, Nigeria, Niue, Norfolk Island, Pakistan, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Pitcairn, Puerto Rico, Samoa, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Somalia, Sri Lanka, St Helena, St Kitts-Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Swaziland, Tokelau, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, US Virgin Islands, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States, Vanuatu, Wake Island, Western Samoa, Zambia, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

English is spoken as a first language by the majority of population in Antigua, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, St Christopher and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, United Kingdom, United States of America.

Estimates of how many people speak a language can never be completely precise and therefore vary considerably. However, English English com, together with World English, have come up with the following figures: Mandarin Chinese (837,000,000), English (370,000,000), Spanish (300,000,000), Bengali (189,000,000), Hindi/Urdu (182,000,000), Arabic (174,950,000), Portuguese (170,000,000), Russian (170,000,000), Japanese (125,000,000), German (98,000,000), Javanese (79,000,000), French (75,000,000). So we can't find Turkish in the list? Is it still a great language?

And I wonder if there is a person in the North Pole speaking Turkish, so should we include it to the list of Turkish spoken countries?

The official languages of the UN are: English, Chinese, French, Russian, Arabic and Spanish. We can't see Turkish language is included. Still a great language?

I hope you have learned a lot together with the illiterate Pearl.

I don't think that the asker means anything bad towards Turkish people. She is just asking why don't speak English but may be want to say for example they speak German more than English. If you follow Di's profile you can understand that she wants to learn better English, so she herself needs to know more English, she doesn't mean that Turkish are not well in English. This is what I think she wants to say. Thanks

Leprechaun
Because our native language is Turkish.

But some of us can speak the language as a foreign language.

AllsTar
they do, when they want and when they like the person that they r gonna talk to:))) JK!!
Well, first of all , our primary language is Turkish, and if we speak English, well or poor, u must appreciate our effort for it, coz I saw many hispanics here in the States and they cant even say "how r u?" or " my name is hector.." what have you... Even tho, they live in an English spoken country. And if u compare those with Turks, trust me we Turks r much better in English than most countries... At least we dont have northern european accent like;instead of "I think so" we dont say " I sink so" or many other examples can be given as well. Anyways, like i told u, most of us speak English little or a lot, but we do and we communicate with body language with tourists as well. At least we are so very friendly and mutual language(body language) can be sometimes communicatively helpful too... Anywaysssssss, it feels like i am writing an email to someone i dont know. Hope it helps u, have a wonderful day... Regards-

because in high school, English lessons weren't enough before
now ministry added an extra year to make students learn. so when a student graduates from an anadolu lisesi or süper lise (lise means high school), they are able to speak English, maybe not fluent but still.
also in universities, English is taught
but Türkiye is a very big country and not all the people are educated. another problem is practicing. we don't have many opportunities to practice our speaking skills.

O.CETIN BAYRAMOGLU
becoz we wasn't a colonie, any time ! !

HFC
Trust me the average Turkish parrot speaks better Turkish than I, (Yes I know but you get my point right). There is a definite learning curve among all people from anywhere when it comes to languages. If you want fluent speakers of a certain language go to where that language is indigenous. But certainly don't get upset.

The big question is why should they speak English. Your in a foreign country immerse yourself in the richness of the language.

We are trying, dear :)

It could be that because they have their own language, called Turkish. They have no need in their daily life to speak english, and can get by in life with no english at all really.

kulla
we are turk. Why should we speak english?

Slick Rick
Us Brits never conquered them. so why should they have to.
but most Turks I know can speak good English. A lot of Turkish Universities offer courses such as Architecture,Engineering, Marketing ect in English only.

Because English wasn't really promoted until recently in the public school system, thus there is a lack of qualified teachers.

This results in the public universities having Turkish teachers of English teaching "Turklish", resulting in students saying and writing awkward constructions like "the food which is sold in the restaurant that offers the yogurt is tasteful".

The teachers who are better skilled get lured away to the private universities and "kolejlar" with the prospects of better salaries, but upon arriving, get stymied by school administration who see their students as "customers" who are paying to get good grades, and if they do poorly, will disenroll, thus the institution losing out on that student's tuition money. It's a zero-sum game: the teacher can't give feedback out of fear for her/his job and the student, by virtue of getting a good grade, thinks they are doing well in her/his English studies.

Like anything else, what you get out of English instruction in Turkey is what you put into it.
