Why are Americans more violent than Europeans? |
Ok, Europeans used to be extremely violent but they have learnt their lesson after WW2 and decided to become a civilized society. For the last 50 years, America has had much higher rates of murder, gun crime, rape, and assault than Europe. Is America uncivilized?
PS. I am only talking about Western Europe of course. |

Because their laws allow them to 'bear arms' which is own guns. It's telling them that it's okay to shoot people!
I am SO going to get reported for this .... |

I don't think we are more violent than we were. I think a huge part of it is the fact that everything is SO publicized, now, and people report things so much more.
There IS a theory, however, that the mobility of our society makes it easier for people to commit crimes, because the victims are not really human to them, not the people they grew up around, and since people can pick up and move at a moment's notice, they can commit crimes and then, just move, with very little consecuence, as no one knows who they are. This has happened, largely BECAUSE of the movements that happened during and because of WWII.
Don't put much stock in those reports, though. Sometimes people publish their theories just to see their names in print. |

I think it has to do with poverty. Yes, America has the most wealth in the world, but that wealth is concentrated in the top percentage of our population. The amount of inequality is staggering. There is a crazy amount of poverty in the U.S., and more children live in poverty in U.S. than any other industrialized nation. As crime is usually an indicator of poverty levels, and young males commit the most crime, and the U.S. has lots of poverty and poor youth, you get the picture.
Obviously violence is a very complex and multifaceted issue, but poverty is definitely a major factor. |

USA is a big country a higher rate of crime is understandable. Is probably more easy for the police in Monaco to control crime.
What socks me about USA is the fact that people get shot at school, at work . I read that in some cities they shot people randomly on streets from cars.
This kind of things never happened in my country and I live in the "less civilized Est". |

Haha, I don't think anyone would get reported for agreeing.
I think most American's realize we live in a violent society.
I don't know what there is to blame besides the overzealous religious and bad parenting.
P.S. The right to bear arms is actually more or less to protect us. Of course people misuse it. I believe it was originally an English right and Americans borrowed it from the English when writing the Bill of Rights ;) |

Both places have had their problems. Why even compare them? Europe and America are completely different in every way. |

I dispute your proposition.
Americans have no history of burning the stadium seats, trampling people underfoot, and throwing rocks when our favorite sports team loses a playoff match.
Presuming you mean violent crimes like murders, then here is a response.
The USA has a history of guaranteeing the highest level of freedoms for its citizenry. That freedom can be abused by people who wish to harm others. Thats why we also have (and use) very harsh punishments for violent criminals.
Freedom comes with responsibility, you see, and since we are free to own guns and other weapons, we are also responsible to our peers if we misuse them. (We are also responsible to act to protect ourselves from criminals.)
We have the crime rate we want, and that we deserve here. Remember that our founding Fathers stated that anyone who would give up freedom in exchange for safety deserves neither. |

This isn't true anymore. Violence has been sharply declining in America and slowly rising in Europe for the last 20 years. Many cities in America are now equally safe as Europe.
Pockets of violence remain in America where there are racial tensions. Europe is a more racially homogenous society. |

Because we protect you. You sleep safe at night because at numerous points in your history we ***** slapped the boogy man for you. If we didn't you'd be speaking German now and doing the goose step.
We kick asses so others don't have to.
You say America has a high crime rate. I beg to differ. What we have is democracy. We publish our findings and issues and work on them. We don’t hide data, censor media, cower in corners, or cry in our tea an crumpets.
We kick asses so others don't have to.
We’re the greatest country in the world. Others nationalities flock here by the tens of thousands to live here.
USA is the greatest country in the world. We kick asses so others don't have to.
