Why aren't Asia and Europe both called Asia or both called Europe?

sometimes it is referred to as the eurasian continent, but i think the main barrier between them is a culture barrier and they just decided to split them from that

Historical and cultural reasons -- the maps were made by Europeans, who were in the habit of thinking of themselves as one grouping of people from a common culture, while the Asians were far away and vastly different.

Historically, the distinction between Europe and Asia was made between Greece and Asia Minor. Because Greece and Asia Minor are separated by the Aegean Sea, Greece and the land roughly to the west of Greece was referred to as Europe; and Asia Minor [Turkey] and the land roughly to the east of Asia Minor was called Asia.

Because they both have different cultures and come from different ancestors/national sources.

For example, European countries usually can be traced back to the Romans or Greeks.

because in between Europe and Asia there is a mountain range, when they named them they did not know that there was land on the other side.....hope that helps

It is considered two continents as the geopolitical realm between what is known as EUROPE and ASIA differs. Geopolitical realm refers to the religion, culture such as clothing, food, architectures, etc. While culture in Europe may differ from one European Country to another, it is generally quite similar. Likewsie for ASIA, where food tends to be more spicy,and Hindu and Buddhism (closely similar) is predominent. Notwithstanding, Islam is also one of the predominent religion with influences from the Middle East.

The are separated by a couple huge mountain ranges and the cultures are totally different. Asia was isolated for centuries from its European neighbors...and well just about everyone else and they liked it that way.

They don't have the same name for the same reason we have a "United States" and a "Canada".

Just because they are on the same landmass doesn't mean it's the same place.

I have wondered this myself. Europe is just one area of Asia - why call it a continent? The connection between African and Asia is much smaller, so it makes sense to consider it a separate mass, but I think the Europe/Asia division is purely cultural and ego-based, with maybe a little racism thrown in, eh?
