Why can't Muslims eat pork?

Being a muslim myself, I never really questioned why we can't eat pork. My parents always told me it is because of sanitary reasons, but I'm not really sure if that's right.
Additional Details
Yeah, I'm not really sure that some of you understand it when I said...I AM Muslim.

I am a muslim but i eat pork . But pork is very unhealthy. Dietitians and nutritionists don't advice it because of high level of cholesterol. It is not a healthy choice. The reason was that when this religion came the place was very hot and pork is not easy conserve and that times there were no fridges. But at that times you could't say to people "hey it is unhealthy don't eat" they would just laugh at you. So it was forbidden,it was the easiest way to educate people then. Now people make their own choices i have christian friends who don't eat pork, neither, for health reasons. There are better types of meat like chicken and fish:)

It is a matter fo religion.Mohamed, the prophet was from Saudia, and in reality, the clima was very hot..One of the reasons is that pork was a heavy food for people living in hot countries..
One of the reasons i read is this..
Maybe there are also others..
Guys if i am wrong dont be angry, i have been told also by muslims that this is one of the reasons, for hygiene first of all..

I looked thorough some previous answers and I will copy Andrew M's explanation which also makes sense to me too:

''Not only in ancient times, but up until recent times eating pork carried a lot more dangers than most other meats if it was even slightly undercooked. Pork had to be done well, well, well done.

Pigs eat an omnivorous diet, much like people do, even more so, because pigs will eat stuff we wouldn't go near. As a result, either from rummaging and eating whatever they ran into, or from eating our throwaways, their food was much more likely to introduce various pathogens that, while the pig might be able to carry on without too much effect, would infect human eaters.

As a result, many older religions (including Judeaism) considered pork to be "evil," and proscribed eating it. Makes sense - eat it, get sick, it's evil.

Parasites, tapeworms and, in particular trichinosis were infamous pork-borne diseases.

Since science taught us from whence those pathogens came, standards improved on requirements for the pigs' diets. "Slop" now has to be thoroughly cooked and sterilized before feeding them to pigs, and many farmers focus more intensely on a vegetable-centric diet for the animals, since a lot of the dangerous bacteria and germs thrive more on meat than plants.

Nowadays, there's no physical or scientific reason for it, but religion is very much about traditions and belief. Now it's because it's considered necessary to be pure and holy, so it really does boil down to "because of the religion."

But at least we can see where it came from.''

It is also stated in Kur'an and the old testiment Bible that it is forbbidden to eat. Like Muslims, Jewish people and the christians who also follow the old testiment do not eat pork- (swine).

There are some other interesting answers to the previous asker who asked the same question. If you wish, follow the link:

i am not a big meat eater but i tasted bacon which is a pork product and i loved it.. only bacon though.. i love it...

Well, all the religious and sanitary/health reasons are explained below. There is also a belief that pigs have periods like human females. Which makes even "dirtier". No offense please ladies.
As long as they are raised in sanitary farms under constant vet control, I believe they can be risk free. On the other hand, we have seen what happened with cows. Developed countries like the UK fed cows with meat-based food (animal offal) and then we got the mad cow disease. I am not much of a believer, but I do know that religions had some reason for those rules.
Anyway, I tried pork. I liked the pork and pork/beef sausages in USA quite good, but did not like the looks of European pork sausages. As for pigs eating just anything, what about free-range chickens? They eat almost all kinds of dirt too, so do some fish, like the expensive red mullet (barbun).
He hehe hehehe we have to be careful.

Pork meat has to much fat and deadly bacterias can easily grow up in it.

There is a psalm in old testament telling a story about jewish tribe cursed by god and turned into pigs and monkeys. This is why they cannot be eaten apparently.

Interestingly, pig protein is most related to human protein eg. transplants from pigs to humans are theoretically possible. Very weird if you ask me.

Maybe it was so at the start of the religion... and I mean Judaism with this. You probably know that many traditions in Christianity and Islam come from Jewish traditions.

Today, sanitary reasons arenot valid any more. Still, because the book forbids pork openly (at least as far as I know), Muslims donot eat it.

Personally, I tastes boar and it was fine. I tasted pork meat and sausages, I found them too fatty for my taste.

Lupin IV
Well Mohommed as you likely know took the Jewish talmud as as a basis for some of Muslims rules. In it the pork taboo is also found.

Pigs have a much higher chance of having parasites and bugs like trichinosis. For those who believe in the idea that God set up these rules we feel God gave these rules for health and safety.

If you check the list of halel/kosher animals you will see that most of the edible animals are herbivores and are less parasite ridden while the unclean are more often carnovores and have a great chance of being parasite ridden or just unhealthy to eat.

Missy
because pigs eat anything they find, and they are considered as "dirty". if u get what i mean
so muslims don't eat it
btw it is really not healthy, eat chicken instead or turkey

I don't have any problem with pork. I am a Muslim and I eat pork, delicious. I also like kokorec. So, if the pork meat is dirty, how you will explain kokorec being clean???

Anyway I love both and belief is in our hearts. Doesn't matter what we eat or drink.

its considered dirty

There are several explanations for this.
According to Jewish law, pork is but one of the many foods forbidden from consumption. In the strictest sense, it is as forbidden as are horses and shrimp. There are gravest interdictions, like eating milk and meat together. However, pork has become the symbol for everything un-kosher, which calls for explanation. The general guidelines given in Leviticus are that a "walking" animal is kosher only if it both chews its cud and has cloven hooves. However, the pig is the only animal to have cloven hooves but doesn't chew its cud: its external aspect makes it appear kosher, while it is not, making it a symbol of hypocrisy.
During the persecutions of Antiochus IV Epiphanes, the Greeks forced the Jews to slaughter pigs in the Jerusalem temple, which did not improve its image. Moreover, the Roman legion X Fretensis, that undertook to destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 68, had a boar for an emblem, sealing its fate as a symbol of everything contrary to Judaism.
Maimonides, the Jewish court physician to Muslim sultan Saladin in the twelfth century, and arguably the greatest of Jewish philosophers and legal codifiers, agreed with other Muslims and Jews of his day by declaring that pork was an "unclean" meat because of pigs' dirty habits; when pigs cannot find water, which is often the case in the Middle East, they have to bathe in mud or their own feces. Maimonides therefore asserted that pork was an unhealthy and unwholesome meat to consume. He was the first to justify the taboo on secular rather than religious reasons.
Medical evidence supporting this early notion did not become available until 1859, when a clinical study found a connection between undercooked pork and trichinosis. This caused a period of unrest for some Jews, as some began to argue that pork was safe to eat so long as it was fully cooked. Orthodox Jews, however, were appalled at this and insisted that there was some other divine meaning behind kosher law. A third view is that the restriction is arbitrary, a way to test the faith. The trichinosis theory is nowadays widely rejected.
The cultural materialistic anthropologist Marvin Harris thinks that the main reason was ecological-economical. Pigs require water and shade woods with seeds, but those conditions are scarce in Israel and Arabia. They cannot forage grass like ruminants. Instead, they compete with humans for expensive grain. Unlike many other forms of livestock, pigs are omnivorous scavengers, eating virtually anything they come across, including carrion and refuse. This was deemed unclean.
Hence a Middle Eastern society keeping large stocks of pigs would destroy their ecosystem. Harris points out how, while the Hebrews are also forbidden to eat camels and fish without scales, Arab nomads couldn't afford to starve in the desert while having camels around.
He also points to Albania where a partition is established: Christians keep pigs and live in the oak woods, while Muslims keep goats and live in places that the foraging habits of goats keep unforested.
Some food psychologists point out the similarity between the Mosaic food laws as laid out in Leviticus and the natural 'disgust' reaction that all people generally show to unfamiliar meats (see the work of Paul Rozin). That suggests that the food taboos were a codification of existing practice rather than the imposition of a new rule, an attempt to give a religious explanation for an existing state of affairs in which the early Israelites did not eat pork etc. while other groups they knew did.

Seriously, let's get the ridiculous Pig-is-God theory out of the way.

Your parents are absolutely correct. Beginning with the fact that pigs tend to eat all things filthy, these animals can pass unpronounceable diseases to consumers. It is for our health's sake that the holy book promotes leaving pigs alone for future Babe or Barnyard or Shrek sequels
