I ask this questions every single time when I see that type of a tourist in my country.and i still don't get the answer.hope u will get it.

It's because Americans aren't educated to the culture of the land(s) that they're visiting. Americans are very inferior to the rest of the world. We Americans don't ever try to learn a different language, let along two or three as many Europeans know. When I travel to Europe(20 or more time I have been) I am very respectful of their land and culture. I love how they look and live. The Americans should learn from them. All Americans are is spoiled brats. Yes, I'm American, but not proud of all that we stand for.

the same people probably wear them in america too. Some people just wear them a lot. and they can wear them in their homeland lol

Because we're the hegemon and we'll do whatever the Hell we please. In Roman times, some centurian could cut your head off for making fun of the fashion of a citizen of the empire. You're getting off light. You should shut your mouth and kiss the ring.

I think some tourists actually WANT to look like tourists.

Americans have this misconception that they are cool, also they want to do things which they cannot do in their home land!

It's probably an airline luggage wieght thing, but not something that Europeans wear. It also beats having to have a sign above their head saying "Rip me off, I'm a Tourist"

Actually I think it's because they think it allows them to feel like they're on an "adventure" of sorts, so shorts allow them to be more "sporty". I assume that -in their mind- shorts have a practical reason as well, allowing them to comfortably walk to EVERY single museum, monument or other attraction within a 30 mile radius of their hotel.

Funny thing is, they stick out because we Europeans do not really have a "shorts" culture. You won't catch many Europeans wearing shorts even in the heart of summer. Maybe its a coolness thing, I don't know.

Problem is all American tourists seem to buy their shorts from the same store; one that apparently has unlimited stock of 70's era, Bjorn Borg style tennis shorts :)
