Why do Canadian people have to wear Canadian flags on their back packs when traveling in foreign countries?

We don't have to...we just do. A Canadian flag indicates that the traveller is Canadian. Legend/history has shown that when you wear one, people leave you alone and treat you well

So they are not mistaken for Americans.

It's a government requirement, no I'm only teasing. Canadians are proud of where we come from, our flag is very easily identifiable in airport luggage carriers, but also recognized by many citizens .

Known fact that wearing our Canadian flag on lapels or backpacks often gets us better treatment because we are not assumed to be Americans. It's the truth, I know I've travelled with mine and people just greet Canadians in a more friendly manner when they see that red maple leaf.

Hamas
So Osama Ben Laden, Hamas and Hezbollah leave them in peace when they travel to those specific countires.

Because that way we don't get mistaken for Americans.

And on top of that, the citizens of countries our country liberated in WW2 are generally very welcoming to Canadians.

As I Canadian, I don´t have to wear a Canadian pin when I travel, but I sometimes do. I was 2002 in Paris and I wore a Canadian pin there. The French thought that I was an American "disguised" as a Canadian. I was told that after 9/11 many Americans who travel around Europe wear a Canadian pin. By wearing the pin I think that the Americans feel safer when travelling!?
