Why do French people call the Doner Kebab (Gyros) restaurants "Grecs "(Greeks) while almost all are Turks?

I am a big fan of Kebab sandwiches, and there are hundred of restaurants in Paris region, but they are almost all Turks, or sometimes Arabs (Lebanese, for example), but people use to call these sandwiches " Grecs" ( Greeks).
And many people even say " I want to eat a Greek"; which actually means " I want to eat a Kebab sandwich" ( or " I want to eat a Gyros sandwich" )
So why is there this confusion about this sandwich?

The doner kebab is a Turkish invention and word, that Greeks made use of, renaming it to gyros and spread by establishing the gyros shops. So the conjunction that gyros is Greek is well maintained, but is only true in reference to the name.
Now, as why the French call it "Grecs" is because they do not hold the Turks in high esteem. It could also possibly be, by being difficult for them to say gyros, stressing the word on the last syllable.

Stop AIDS(angy's message)
First it was invented by Greek people, my friend went to Greece,Albania and Montenegro too and said that there she ate the most delicious sandwiches and doners of her life.......................................
They are a Greek invention although.

SUE
Because the sandwich has its original roots in Greek cuisine.

In my country they are called shawerma, which reveals an Arab origin. I love the chicken one - YUM! In all fairness, I believe all the dolmades, baklava and stuff like that came from the Arabs through the Greeks or the Turks. But the Turks were in everyone's country at the time, so they assimilated many cultures, kind of like the Borg.

Did you know that Aristotle was translated by and Arab and then made his way to the rest of Europe? Interesting.

Tolis
If a French person has a Greek restaurant does not mean that we have to call it French restaurant.
Gyros is a Greek word that means round from the way the gyros is baked. This ans also the fact that these sandwiches were first lunched by Greeks gives the name

I really don't have enough time to explain but I will tell you this. The previous summer we visited Paris for a month. There are, as you probably know, many restaurants in a small passage, very close to Notre Dame, that is mainly occupied by Greek taverns. As we are Greeks we stopped to a tavern, as a man from the store was inviting us to go inside. And we spoke to him in Greek but he didn't know any Greek, all though he was advertising his products as coming from Crete!
He was looking more like a Turk and less than an Arab.
I think it is a matter of advertisement. And as in France Greek culture is popular,as I think, that's why it happens what you are saying it happens.

Isis
Gyros and kebab are not the same dish, gyros is Greek and kebab is Turkish.

Because Doner Kebap were introduced first in Paris (Saint Michel) by Greek people... and it became very popular (of course !)..

Later, Turkish people came more.. and some change now to call it "Kebab" (even if the correct one is Kebap).
