Why do Greeks get the reputation of being snobby and arrogant?

Modern Greeks such as Byzantine Empire(whos actually Armenian,thus non Greek) ,are who you speak off when you mention arrogant Greeks.The failure of modern Greeks to live up to the past causes insecurity in such individuals.Joined with a historical dislike for Turks because of defeat in war causes them to use popular history in an EXTREMELY general way in order to gratify themselves.

Greeks invented science and medicine? No,Eygptians and Chinese were doing that pre-ancient greece.Buildings of wonder? Answer-the Pyramids,Communication and art? read,hieroglyphics.Astronomy? Eygptian pyramids were constructed in line with the stars so pharos could find thier way to the afterlife.Drama? So...American Indians who told stories of the great hunt in full costume is not drama?

mythology, smashing all their enemies, adopting the Christian faith are things to be proud of? Well Ancient Turks had shamanist mythology which predates Greek mythology.Smashing thier enemies? All your bloody wars....WERE AGAINST EACH OTHER!!! Adopting Christianty? What does that mean? Oh i know,it means giving the finger to all your Ancient Greek gods in place of a middle eastern religion written by jews and middle eastern men.

I urge users to challenge popular historians like byzantine empire,and let people know the world is one big civilisation and not his selfish and insecure version of it.

That is just a generalization about a certain group.
I know plenty of snobby Greeks, true.
But, I also know more friendly and unselfish Greeks.
It just depends on the person really.

I have only found that attitude amongst Greek women - however NOT ALL but plenty. Having said that OAP Greek Women are fun!

I personally have never found Greeks to be snotty or arrogant, i guess every race could have these traits when looking at their heritage. It would be more constructive to look at every race and learn from the mistakes made. As the world gets smaller we all travel and hopefully learn about each others culture and history (good and bad). I have sympathy for the Greeks as far as cyprus is concerned and hopefully the dispute will be ended sooner rather than later. Having traveled in both countries (Greece and Turkey) i would say that i have enjoyed the culture and friendliness from both countries, again i would ask that respect is given to each other.

We are not arrogent or snobby, we just have strong beleifs.

My mom says that I act really tough and confident. I have a hard outer shell but inside I am really soft, and I am exteremly stubborn. The reason for this is because of all the $hit I have gone through in my life.

I have had friends walk out of my life. I had a bunch of my BEST friends move 6 hours away from my house. Jealousy has eaten some of my friends alive which has caused them to hate me and fight against me. I have had to physically defend myself from other Greek girls before. I have had to verbally defend myself, I have had to literally SCREAM to people and tell them who I really am in order for them to respect me.

I succeeded in many great things only because I wanted to prove myself and I have had the drive and dedication of an athlete. I have had to deal with hate and jealousy so many times in my life, but somehow other people's hate towards me has driven me to success. I have been put down, slandered at, and verbally abused soooo many times in my life that it hardened me.

I always get into trouble both in and out of school, but people can tell that my heart is in the right place. I am a rebel that has a cause. And I am naturally a trouble maker but thats just who I am. take it or leave it.

The only thing that I can completely defend myself with is my fists, and my kicks. And now that has made me think differently, I am shy but I know who I want to be with. Shyness looks like snobbyness. I am confident and I know who I am, confidence looks like snobbyness, so dont let my outer shell full you into thinking that I am snobby and arrogant because I still have love for everybody.

But if I feel excepted then I will be friendly and loving

Because when Greece was building empires, the Parthenon (Acropolis), introducing exciting ideas such as democracy, creating alphabet, studying philosophy, medicine, history, geography, olympics, science, inventing Greek fire (that burns underwater), mythology, smashing all their enemies, adopting the Christian faith, etc...your people were probably still nomadic and migrating somewhere between Asia and Euopre, while still many other tribes were still swingin' from tree tops...we brought the HELLENIC civilization thru Alexander the Great from Europe into Asia and Africa, give Greece some credit...SO PLEASE NOW WHY DON'T YOU TELL US YOUR ETHNIC ORIGIN SO WE CAN MAKE AN EVALUATION???

Well, I dont agree with you.

If you ask foreigners, the most possible is to hear that Greeks are friendly, warm and always willing to help.

When it comes to insulting,especially by neighbors, then Greeks are becaming arrogant.This is defence.

greek guy takes caution be be the best **** on parade..if another **** shows up better than him or trying to down size him he will get arogant.. greek girls are par excelelnce when it comes to catching men..they are arogant to other woman who try to catch the same fish.. speacilly as u said the younger crowd... the older greeks been there done that..lol iam glad i fall in that catagorie.

We are usually friendly and hospitable.

@Keyser: Armenians are a great Christian nation of the East whom the Turks did their best to erase from the face of the earth but they didn't manage it. However, the Byzantine Empire was not Armenian, it was the continuation of Ancient Greece.
What ancient Turks? Do you forget when the Turkish tribes arrived in what is Turkey today? Or, you mean ancient Mongolians?

I think it is exactly as you say it.
I haven't met Greeks that boast for their past and are arrogant because of this. We are aware of what we have inherrited and we make our best to respect it (most of the times).
You can say that Greeks are often spoiled like kids, not arrogants.

The younger generation of greeks have been generally spoiled. They're parents had it tough in the early years, but since then the general population's standards of living increased. This generation went on to spoil their children, as they tried to give them what they never had. These children grew up getting almost whatever they wanted (to some extent), were praised and had a lot of attention. I think this is what has lead to the snottiness you refer to in some of the younger generations.

I completely agree with you, even about the elders been xenophobic.

Let me also just say, I'm making a generalisation. There are many Greek who aren't snobby and arogant.

Give Greeks back to us! They forgot the lessons we were teaching them for *500* years, to be non arrogant and respectful. This time we will make sure they will learn their lesson. We will make them proud Turks with no arrogance and prejudice. Greeks we love you to death!
