Why do Greeks hate Turks ? |
There are a lot of similarities between the two nations to the degree that most people around the world can't differentiate between a Greek and a Turk at first glance. So, Can you explain to me why you have so much hate for them? |

You cannot create a seperate, independent Greek identity without vilifying Ottomans under which current Greeks lived for centuries, and hence the Turks. If you accept that the Ottoman Empire and Turks were alright, people will ask, "Why did you go for independence then?"
Ask us about it. One of the first things we learned in primary school was that the last era of the Ottoman Empire was bad. We had to grow up a lot before learning the extent of Ottoman history, evaluate the matter and give Ottomans their due.
As for today, I witness that whenever Greece or Turkey has something political that they donot wish the public to be aware of, some disagreement happens and Greece and Turkey come to the "brink of war". Be it the embezzlement of Greek Orthodox priests (they are always the first to raise the cry) or the unacceptable expenditure of Turkish politicians, such policies are covered under a hail and cry and we, the public, lap it up.
Else, I don't see why two NATO member states should see each other as threats. |

Well they are modern 'rivals' so to speak. Both nations are the most powerful in the region, and both are proud people.
In modern times Greece came off worse in the later battles and lost land, while Turks secured thier new borders and newer way of life.Since the 1940's Turkey has been going through a progressive cultural revolution to be more modern and find a place in the civilised world,Turks dont really have the time to sit around thinking up old hates.
I cant speak for a Greek but Vasikili i think is probably right, the wars and loss of life for Greeks and the lost land would cause anyone bitterness.
But shes also right in saying that Turks today have nothing to do with that atall,so it would be very odd to hate innocent strangers. |

Hate is a strong word, dislike is probably better suited. This hasn't been going on for thousands of years, we barely were in touch for about a thousand. Why the dislike? Because most of the wars we have fought are with them the last thousand years, and we were in the brink of war many times in the recent past, even at present. Some Greeks see them like a leech feeding from us when it needs blood from the time they showed up around the area. Include the deportation and killing of almost the entire Greek population from anatolia, only those that changed their religion and started calling themselves Turks stayed behind (there is barely anyone to call himself Greek there left), and the situation in Cyprus, and that pretty much sums our reasons to dislike. |

Well, to tell you the truth, the first words that come to mind are:
Occupation
Pogrom
Catastrophe
Invasion
Human rights violations
Turkey's reign of terror against the Greeks is still continuing today. Just ask the Ecumenical Patriarch and the Greeks of Constantinople. They will tell you. |

If Greeks hate somebody then the answer is 'Albanians' but not all Greeks hate Albanians and vice versa(The phenomenon is fading)Greeks don't hate Turks except some extreme nationalist ones..U'll rare meet a person who cares about this stuff nowadays...Ur question is very annoying..
Farnic I never met a greek saying he/she hates armenians or all the others u re typing below...the extreme nationalists(which probably are around 5%)hate everybody only.Excluding them the average patriotistic greek would hate only Albania and Turkey, what u re typing is hillarious (hating egyptians or..socialists(why did they have a so-called socialist party ruling for 20 yrs then?)or russia for communism(aw dont tell me?then why greece is the only eu country which has so many communists?) ) ts ts ts ... |

This is a question that really does not have a true answer. Just like the Jews and the Palestinians.
This is something that has been going on for thousands of years. |

Another trollish question... We do not hate them.
added: Come on Vasiliki, no need to deny it anymore... Farnic has uncovered us both! You are a secret service agent and I am a Baath militant. And who knows what the other Greeks here really are... ;) |

I agree 100% with Vasiliki.
I also think that our mentality is, and was, always different. We can't understand each other, we have, as countries but as individuals too, complitely different aims.
We understand differently our existance and role in the region. |

there's a very long history between them you can't expect that disappears quickly however it's not all about turks or greeks who were in the game of politics i hope more positive things'll happen |

BANG. HEAD. HERE.
Most people don't even care that much any more...but if you were talking about Albania or FYROM you might have had something.
Okay well first off. Most people I know can tell the difference between a Greek and a Turk. But sometimes it can get hard. Its like saying that you cant tell a difference between a Spaniard and an Englishman. Sometimes its hard, but most of the time its not. Obviously they're both Caucasian so there is bound to be some overlap.
As to why the Greeks don't like the Turks and vice versa, during the Ottoman empire Greeks were basically treated as second class citizens, and towards the end of it, many Greeks were kicked out of Pontus and between 300,000 and 500,000 were killed.
Then there is Cyprus. Greeks were somewhat abusing the Turkish minority there and then kicked Britain off the island so in 1974 the Turks invaded and took over half the island and started kicking out Greek civilians. They still haven't given up their occupation. |

It would be more accurate to say dislike.
And even this way, still no all Greeks dislike Turks.
Just some, and mainly those who have direct bonds with the Turkish crimes against Greeks
There are many people who have lost family-relatives,because of Turks and this is something that you cant forgive and forget.
My grand-grandfather and his family was one of them.
Even now,I dont even dislike Turks, because new generation is not responisble of past actions, but I cannot be patient to hear about the "tolerance" of Turkish people against Greeks , or the denying of Pontic Greek genocide,etc..
There are lot of similiraties between us ,this is true, and the every-day average Turks, are nice and warm people.Unfortunately most of the hardcored brainwashed nationlists use to be around Y!A answer and "give Turks a bad name"
So, 400 years of occupation,Instabul pogrom, Smyrne catastrophe, massacre of Chios,Illigal invansion in Cyprus, are some reasons that a Greek could dislike a Turk.
@Elaine:
Yeah you are right,I am a KYP secret agant, you are a Baathist,What the rest of Greeks here are?? |
