greeks name their kids after their grandparents out of respect.......its an honor to be named after a greek person......most parents want to name their kids after their grandparents....the youth feels fine about it......if you really dont like your name then you can find a nickname to be called......its not rocket science dudee |

It's mainly symbolic, like passing the torch of tradition to the next generation. Grandparents expect this and parents try to oblige out of respect.
The young feel fine about it, since they have no choice,LOL.
Nicknames are also common, for those who are not pleased with the parents choice.
Isn't always the case anyway? |

you are not obliged to do it!!!!
of course a parent has the right to name his child as he likes...
there is no law to say "name the child as the grandparent"
but if you honor you parents you do this.....
i dont know th propose of this...
as a young person i have no problem to name my children as their grandparents,as long as the name is not something extremely ugly.....
most of the names can have a nice "short name" too...... |

It's tradition to do so. I wasn't named after a grandparent and I wish I was. I want to change my name to Georgia because my late pappou was named George. |

Maybe to remember loved ones that died or when they die to remember them there are many different reasons not only greeks do it |

It is a tradition like everyone already said before me...
It is out of honour and respect to elder persons of your family.
All my cousins from my father's side have the name of his mother which I found ridiculous. We have the same name and last name and the only thing that changes is our father's name.
The only one that "got away" is me because and I ended up having two names the second of course is my grandmother's name..... |

Edit: The "thumbs down fairy" visited this question again. I guess somebody didnt like the name Alexander for my son. LOL |

It's just a tradition but nowadays it's not obligatory. More and more couples give a different name to their child. And I totally agree with you and personally I think I won't give to my child his grandmother/grandfather's name. |

I didn't name my children after my parents, and they didn't mind. Nor did my brother. I think many young Greeks start naming their children the way they want to. |
