Why do Greeks smoke so much?

It's not only about laws or something like that...it's a "lifestyle" for example most Greeks start smoking very very young. It is seen as a form of...maturity... through adolescent life to adult life.Also it's a matter of education and civilization...if you take a closer look at the Greek society you will see parents - heavy smokers saying that they don't want their children to smoke but their acts show exactly the opposite. I was a smoker myself for sometime but l avoided smoking in public because l find it irritating, for ex. the person next to me breaths my smoke...that's totally unfair. Also the other example of Greek lifestyle : a smoker in Greece will wake up, make some coffee and smoke a couple of cigarettes excellent nicotine and caffeine for breakfast.
Of course it's a bad habit but come on...we Greeks lack of sensitivity ...we know that's bad for us, our health and our money and people around us but we still do it.

Because it is allowed - actually by law it is prohibited in public spaces, but it is not implemented.

I was a smoker for about 20 years but my kids made me cut it out.I had promised them at some time that when I reach 40 I''ll stop and I did.Now I can't stand the smell of it.I agree it's a nasty,disgusting habit.I don;t even remember what kind of pleasure I was getting out of it!!!Yia sou.

yes that is true, i read that Greece has the highest smoking rates in the EU. I really dont have an answer in why they do it so much! All i can say is that i am Greek and i dont smoke yet my family does! My dad, half of my aunts & uncles, 3/4 of my cousins, and both my grandfathers. Its a stupid habit that makes no sense! It destroys your lungs, its bad for your your health and its a waste of both your money and time. So i dont get it... whats the point of doing it ??? arghh!

Because - it's cool ...... it keeps you slim (girls) ...... it's inexpensive ........ it makes you look older.

I hate smoking!!!!! PLEASE let Greece start to ban it at least in tavernas! But then again they haven't managed to get motorcyclists to wear helmets yet!!

ONLY the greeks? lol ....Man you need to travel more...man it an issue of individuals if you ask me..being a smoker for 35 years @ 60 a day..one thing i can say i enjoyed every minute of it....on the other hand now i havent touched one for 3 and half years now and i enjoy every minute of it..so where is the comparrison? i guess your only argument is that it does stink when consumed at an intoroable rate..heallth issues? i dont know people get sick with out smoking or being near a smoker.and getting the big (c).if i where you i would worry about the pollution that we breath in every day..from our disregade for nature and our insasable..thirst for automation..every thing has to be easy these days..even speech is too much for us we cut corners at every level... we are self destructing..with our unneeded consumption..smokes are but a small issue of the bigger promblem to the well being of the human race..

Michael... It's true! We smoke a lot and I really don't know why, maybe It's from our culture.
In the world a lot of people smoke but I think that in Europe, Greece is the number one about It.
This week I was in mukonos "Cavo Paradise" and all my friends was smoking then I started to smoke 2 and I smoked a lot, like 20 cigarettes in one night.
I'm feeling so bad now, I can't breach well steal today :(
It was my first time smoking and It was a lot for my first time.You don't know how bad I'm now, my heart is like crazy and It was 2 days before 2day and steal like this.
I don't wanna smoke again.
In Greece people smoke a lot... Nobody can say that It's not true :(

Because foreigners give them so much grief! Just a joke! But then again you come to this forum filled with Greek people and you say we have disgusting habits? Are you from a country without disgusting habits, offering unasked opinions? Bad boy! ;-)

I suppose people are right when they complain about all that smoking, I can imagine it can get pretty irritating. Probably a bad habit too... However, I dont want them to ban smoking in public places in Greece. I am a heavy smoker myself and I would not take it too well... lol :)

Because it makes you high. I'm not sure why people who have never smoked have such a hard time understanding that.
