Why do Greeks struggle to be faithful?

As a nation we have if not one of the highest divorce rates in the world then the highest '' affair'' rate !Why is this?Do Greeks simply enjoy the pleasures in life more than others?Do we lack self control? Are women more promiscuouse than in the past?Is marriage not taken seriously?
Whats the problem?

First of all I do not agree with you that this is a Greek problem, since I think it's a universal problem.Nowadays it is promoted by tv series, magazines, movies etc that you can't and shouldn't be faithful to one person,if you are that means you are stupid, naive etc.If people see from a young age, before they start dating(for example the ages of 12-15) that cheating is normal, they see it everyday on tv,they read about it in books and magazines, they see it in their personal lives(friends, family members, neighboors) etc how can you not expect them to cheat when they get older and start dating?
Also a thing that has changed over the last ten years maybe is the fact that more and more women begin to cheat or have multiple sexual partners.I think that is because the women of today misunderstood the movement of equality with men. When this movement first started it was about women getting equal opportunities in the work field, not having to be ashamed of their sexuality etc.But over the years somehow that has been translated to:Sleep with as many guys as you can, that is the way to show you are an independent woman.I think that is just wrong,it doesn't make you independent if you have one one night stand after the other,it makes you easy and cheap(sorry,I'm being hard maybe, but i see it too much, and the ages keep getting younger and younger). And the same goes for the men too(it's not okay for a man to have a different sexual partner each night either)
Last, and that is a Greek problem, sex is often considered taboo here. The parents don't talk to their children about it,and there is no sexual orientation class in school(which I think is one of the biggest mistakes in our school system). Therefore, young people who are at an age to start their sexual activity aren't informed or even worse are falsly informed by friends or magazines. They don't know or understand the dangers of having multiple sexual partners without protecting yourself, this is why Greece has one of the highest percentages of sexual transmitted diseases and abortions under the age of 30 worldwide!!
An other point which is also common in our country is that often children are repressed by their parents or don't have a good relationship with them, therefore they can't talk about their relationships and feel like they should keep it secret from their parents. Also,a lot of young people are very "good" until they reach the age of 18,just to please the parents and not cause any problems and than go totaly out of control when they go away to another city to study(where nobody knows them or their parents)...
About the divorces you are asking, the divorce rate is really high in every country, that's why I don't intend to get married.I think people don't take marriage too serious, they get married three or four times and they act like it's a normal thing(like going for shopping or something).I think in that case we were better of a few years in the past, when people made an effort to stay together and didn't give up at the first difficulty.

in order to reach marriage u have to be able to understand that u have found the partner that will share all ..faithful is spontaneous but to generalize its not a good idea ,highest divorce rates worldwide is usa ,,

First of all, don't get me wrong. I like Greece!! I would say that the main problem is that self-image of macho-man most Greek men have. Since they are very little their parents sometimes take pride of the fact their sons are always chasing girls. It is the society that makes little boys grow into men who see women as a sexual object rather than a human being. If they sleep with many women, they are praised. They base their manhood in the size of their penis more than any other man; probably because Greek men are quite famous because of it lol If a Greek man cheats, ahh it's expected and forgivable. If a woman cheats... hell she's a whore.
On the other hand, women are supposed to be super feminine and quite low profile. They are raised to please.
The macho-man stereotype needs to be erased before major changes are seen in those rates.

Ps. Indeed, divorce rates are growing really fast all over the world. But the question is about Greeks, that's why I answer it in terms of Greece.

The divorce is always the same, and the consequences the same, no matter the country.Human beings are similar, with the same needs everywhere.Lately in Greece yes we ahve noticed that, but nont so much as abroad. This is due to the principles and the structures of the greek society.
Dont forget that a divorce in the greek society is something heavy, and still we havent reached the level of Europe concerning the protection of the woman by the law, so we can see so many women nowdays that they have to afford situations in order not to be a target in the family or society. Then there is what we say''face the day after''withgout any insurance or without a partner to support them.
It i really difficult in Greece, and who says that the greek women get dovorced easily is wrong..It is just enough to see how many couples live a conventional life in order to keep their status in the society...

I fully agree with Maria Gracia.
Anyway, it is better to be honest and get a divorce, than commit continuous adultery and pretend that you have a healthy relation / marriage. Besides far too many people get married, when they should not have in the first place. They only do it because they are supposed to.

I don't believe we are less faithful than , say, the French. In France it is so normal to have at least an affair besides marriage!
As for why we are not faithful, it has to do with the lifestyle model that is has recently become the model of the New Greek, as is presented by TV: to be a successful businessman with many women, fast cars and smoking a cigar. I hate this type of men! The idea of culture, education, family, politically correct is not in their vocabulary. And I'll tell you what: I know a few guys who are indeed successful businessmen: they are not show-offs and they don't have many girlfriends: those who try desperately to follow the model of the "successful" guy, are the losers.

Being influenced by foreign customs (i.e usa life style) we lost some of the characteristics that made us unique as a nation..

Selfish behavior is so common and as a result relationships become more and more hard to deal with
we dont like making truce and give up our rights for our partners shake. And when we do, it is considered to be an action of "stupidity or weakness" than of love and caring..

Things changed and the present condition proves that we weren't strong enough to maintain to our beliefs and culture..

this is why some people in this section we cry out for the immediate need for the Greeks to CHANGE-meaning we should become as we were in past, to adopt again those characteristics that made other nations to respect us, instead of laughing at us

The problem is that Greeks have no passion in life and they consider love as cheesy not to mention the fact that they get married for financial reasons(and don't say no coz i see it happening every day) so these type of marriages can't last for a long time..Anyway the fact that we get more divorces here lately is better than just stayin married to be married for ..traditional reasons..Don't u think so?I don't wana be annoying but as an answer to the girl above i have to say 'No thanks!' to this specific greek culture she's probably talking about...and don't forget that 'greek' culture is the ancient one not the extra-conservative modern one ;-)

Airpole
As already suggested, the life style that magazines, TV shows, and newspapers promote on every day bombardment of the young people, is the main cause of the loose marital state and the resulting divorces.
Financial-interest marriages I would say, on the contrary belief, seldom get dissolved. They may end in couples looking around for what they are missing, but they don't divorce.
Yet , that situation is nothing new to society. Maybe, some people do it to be in fashion, or because their needs are not met accordingly by their partners and although nothing can excuse that behavior, it something that can not be changed.
