Many Turkish city/district names have Greek, Arabic, Persian, Syriac and Kurdish origins. I know that Antep comes from Arabic Aintab. "Gazi" means "Veteran" in Turkish, and it's a title given to Antep in the 20's after the Turkish War of Independence. Trabzon comes from Greek Trebizond. Erzurum comes from Arabic Arzen-i Rum (Arzen of Rome). Not sure about Siirt, Nizip and Cizre. The last two, by the way, are not cities, but districts within cities (Gaziantep and Sirnak, respectively).

Not that you are really looking for an answer. ;)

No offense....just out of curiosity...your name is very unusual too! What is the meaning or the story behind it?
Have a beautiful day in a beautiful world with beautiful people!

I am so jealous now, Cetin! But I know her matchless beauty must be overwhelming, so you are forgiven!

Greetings Skunky Skopje,
There is a town in Sweden called Ölmevalla. The best of all is, town's cemetery is also called Ölmevalla.
Ölmevalla in Turkish means, please don't die
That is where every other town name has less meaning hahaha...

How about these: Ars (Denmark), Fuch (Austria), Masala (Finland)...the list is endless of funny names around the world.

Turkey is an ancient civilization and most of these names come from old Turkish language, which have different meanings.

because they are in Turkish??....

TURKISH
Rating
Because all of them has a meaning and history...

For example;
The Turkish Parliament gave the city the title Gazi ("victorious warrior") on February 8, 1921 (the day before the city surrendered to the French) in recognition of the valor of its inhabitants during the Turkish War of Independence, and the city officially took the name Gaziantep ("Antep the Veteran") in 1921.

If we wanted to make it just for name we gave them colorful name like " Mavi Sehir, Yesil Sehir, Guzel Sehir, Harika Ilce, Mukemmel Koy "...

Everything has a reason :))

Mark
Rating
because they have a strange language.
