Why do Turkish people smoke so much?

Turkish tobacco is legendary. Cigarettes are cheap, especially those made by TEKEL, the state monopoly on tobacco and alcohol.

The national love of lighting up is changing slowly, though. One municipality in Istanbul in 2005 required all bars and restaurants to designate at least 20% of seating as non-smoking, and a lot of Turkish teenagers find smoking (or dating smokers) disgusting.

Yeah man I dont know the reason either but they all smoke. That is crazy. I have never been to a palce in Turkey where someone doesnt smoke. I dont think I have seen non-smoking areas in any of the restaurants or anything. The only place I saw a nonsmoking setion was at the airport. Again though there was a smoking section inside the building and not in a little cave room like the US.
I know I didnt answer anything but I think it is odd as well. I will wait for a good answer here :)

Oh well, I think you saw lots of people smoke in Turkey because the law against smoking in public places isn't practiced in Turkey. Maybe that's why you think Turks smoke more than other people. Personally, I don't think so.

Well its a mediterrenean thing. The entire European mediterrenean coast is full of heavy smokers. Greeks, for instance, are known to be the heaviest smokers in Europe. I believe its a cultural thing, dont forget, a pack of Marlboro for a Turk does not carry the same meaning that it does for lets say an American! In Turkey and other mediterrenean countries, a cigaratte pack can stand for power and masculinity!

Seriously you just SAW them. I believe the same for British when i SEE them smoking one after another when they are in Greece. When i went to london I understood why (there it was forbidden even at coffee shops).
Anyway smoke is cheap in Turkey and Turks made great tobacco (mass production has ruined all tobacco)

because they are all stressed (work, finances and love issues)... Kids start at a young age.. My cousins started at 11.. I think im the only one that doesnt smoke.. and cigarettes are hella cheap in Turkey...So even if your poor you can still afford a pack of ciggys

1- Unfortunately smoking cigarette is like a growing symbol for Turkish teenage.
2- Its cheap in TÃ¼rkiye.
3- Smoking forbidden areas are so-called forbidden, they must have effective and definite penalties.
4- Turkish people need more education on this subject.

The smoking hysteria is American. In Europe, smoking is a lot more acceptable, like sex and leftism. It's a cultural thing.

I am a Turk.As much as i know years ago ,the popular artists of turkish films used to smoke ,so the youths desire to use the cigaret.And the writings on cigaret packets as 'Cigaret is harmful for your health' come too late for us to realize it. But the disease as pulmonary cancer begin to increase.Nowadays people around me giving up smoking.May be the knowladge of the cigaret's harm is beginning to be understood.Well i wish the smoking ratio will decrease in new year.

Cigarrettes are cheap in Turkey and there are no anti-smoking campaigns going on.
It has probably not hit their side of the world that...YES cigarrettes cause cancer.
