Why do my fellow Turks fear the cold and wind? |
After having lived in the US for some years studying, it still baffles me how my fellow Türks are afraid to go outside when it is below 20 C or are even afraid of open windows. Don't get me started on the so-called link between drinking cold liquids and sore throats. Haven't teyzes heard of viruses? |

Let me know when you figure this one out. I'm not looking forwards to taking the IETT again this summer. I remember during a hot spell when a girl asked for the air-conditioning to be turned off just as we got stuck in traffic, so no wind could flow in either. I could feel the sweat pouring down my back--which ironically, is also a teyze-given reason for catching cold.
Also annoying are cab drivers who insist on smoking, yet want all of the windows shut. Yeah, the draught is going to kill you, not the second-hand smoke full of carbon monoxide....ummm...right. |

That is sooo true. I`m Cdn, but my hubby is Turkish, and so we´ve had too many such discussions. And then there is the issue of how the kids should be dressed.....I´ve plenty of clashes with the in-laws about that one.
We live in Germany and Turks are just the same here as in Turkey, on this subject. For a Canadian it all seems ridiculous. But after I spent time in windy Istanbul, and ended up getting a cold myself there, I could at least understand the "logic" of wearing an undershirt under a t-shirt when it is 35°C. At least, kind of.
As for the cold drinks thing..... Canadians drink everything chilled, often with ice-cubes. We don´t touch anything at room-temperature. Then during a holiday in Turkey we were very hot (at a beach) and I drank a bottle of chilled water (of course, my husband warned me....). I have never been so sick, and it started immediately after I drank it. For three days I couldn´t keep anything down, and for a week after that my husband only fed me plain yogurt (YYUUUUCCCKKK!!!!) and breadsticks. Back in Canada, the doctors had no explanation, although they of course laughed at the Turkish doc´s reasoning. Ever since then, I´ve had a touchy stomach. (But, at least I learned to like plain yogurt....).
So I am living proof that the Teyzes are .... at least sometimes ...... right. (Although I, the stubborn and "educated" Cdn. woman hated to admit it).
Now I never drink anything which is cold, and always get strange comments from my parents when they see I leave the juice out of the fridge.
As for my kids, they can´t handle anything cold first thing in the morning. My youngest hates any cold drink, and insists I "warm it up". It must be in his DNA. |

Lol, true. My theory is that we're such warm people that we can't tolerate cold weather. We're not cold-blooded! |

You are right but, haven't you heard of "getting cold"?
when it is cold outside and you are freezy, your body temperature gets down, now you are unprotected to viruses that lives with you and at last you are ill because of cold!
our teyzes are mostly right :-) |

It's experience, pal, and I've learned it the hard way. There is a direct link between wind, cold liquids and illness.
That's what we call empirical proof. You can't find an explanation doesn't mean it doesnot exist. Trust the wisdom of teyzes. |
