Why do people from Europe and USA always criticize Turkey and turkish people ? Why so much prejudice ?

And I agree with Fatih, there are too many people who don't even know our culture, and they 're always trying to judge us, saying we are criminals,terrorists,etc...

Yes, we are Muslims! And so what ?

REAL ISLAM IS PEACE AND TOLERANCE, CAN YOU UNDERSTAND IT ?

And before criticizing our history and our past , at first take a look at yourselves. Are you going to give money to descents of African slaves ? Are you going to leave all the american territories and give them back to native Indians ( Redskins,Navajos, Apaches, etc,etc...)

So why do you judge other people, when you did things even worse ?

Ok, I'm Turkish and I say: We need those criticism in order to progress.
I read news and read opinions of EU officials and I think they're not criticising just to criticise. They have valid points.

Racists, ignorant people commenting on Turkey without any knowledge, or ultra nationalists of neighbour countries. Just avoid them, let them perish in their dark, smelly, and very meaningless worlds.

But don't overreact on every criticism, many criticisers are doing it for Turkey's sake

And our Greek friend above well said. Turkey is not the only country.

I found Turkish people very decent, educated, well mannered, and friendly. Whoever meet them once can never be against them,if he/she is not racist. I think turkish nation has all the qualities to lead the world especially Muslim world.

The prejudice is founded on ignorance, especially where Americans are concerned. Only about 30% of Americans have a passport, which means 70% of us don't get out enough. Our knowledge of world geography and culture is practically nil, except for those few who have been in the military, the diplomatic corps, or The Peace Corps.

Those of us who have been there understand Turkey is a good place. Like any nation, it's a human enterprise, so it's not perfect (neither is the US; neither is western Europe), but it's pretty good.

The only way to combat prejudice is with information. For my part, I tell those I know how much I enjoyed the time I spent living in Turkey. I can't wait to go back, largely because I know my Turkish friends will welcome me with open arms and genuine love.

Wow, aren't you generalizing that a bit? Anywhere you go, you will find people who are ignorant about one thing or another and I don't think it's fair to automatically make the assumption that the majority of the people from the U.S. or Europe feel this way.

I am from the U.S. and I am in the process of learning the Turkish language and hopefully traveling there over the summer...so not all of us are blinded by ignorance:)

As I have said though, no matter where you go there will be people who are going to be ignorant about things from religion, race, where people are from, etc. However, you have to realize that they just lack any ability to be open-minded and if they allow themselves to continue to be filled with negativity and hate, then their opinions don't matter and the only person they are hurting or making look bad is themselves.

Come on now...In USA I dont think so,USA has always been your partner.About Europe, yes,and you know, just Greece was with your part when Europe was telling no to your entrance in The European Comunity.But lets take the things from the beginning..Do you think that those who are against you woke up a day and said:Lets be aginst Turkey?There are political reasons,not particularly private.Then, dont forget, that Turkey is developped just in the west part, I swear I have friends cultivated people from South Eastern Anatolia, they really say that they cant live there because of the conditions of life.Turkey has to be developped in many things, because it is a country which produces so much, but it is the consciousness, now they refuse also to enter European Comunity..If the percentage of education increases, the consciusness will also change.(Dont be angry, these are the words of your citizens, friends of mine).

I haven't noticed particular prejudices against Turkey or Turks - perhaps it's a regional thing. They are generally considered an ally of the USA. It was a little below the belt when they pulled their support immediately before the latest Gulf War though. I agree that dialog rather than name calling would be much more productive.

BTW for some of the answerers' information - the Turkish Republic is not a Muslim country - the fact that most of the people living in Turkey are Muslim (apx. 96%) doesn't mean that the country has a religion-based system. Turkey is a laic country. My mum has never had any difficulties or problems as a German citizen in Turkey since she came in 1975.

I am not sure how to answer this question as I know a lot of countries getting criticised, positive criticism can help us to see the mistakes as mind trick said but to me there are some criticism made against Turkiye are not to be taken very seriously as I know that we are not wanted in EU and they will turn a flee into a camel....But these are politics and ordinary people are not really affected by those..

so I know how it feels

and we still are looking for the reasons..
some say it is a matter of religion (we are Orthodox) some say matter of culture (not European style) some others say that is a matter of our geographical position and so on..
all of them are right
we - the Greeks- just like you, we are DIFFERENT from them

we ll never be like them - this is the true reason

but to those who believe that turkey are being criticized cause of the religion matter, i ask them -if it is so, then why Europeans accept Jews so easily????

not all Brits do that its probably a religious thing as we don't tend to trust Muslim nations anymore since 9/11 sad but true.PS Ive visited your country and found the people there very friendly.fethiye and ulo deniz.wasn't to keen on sitting at a certain restaurant again though on the front of fethiye promenade as there was a bomb planted there a week after we ate there,something to do with the Kurds if memory serves me right.

Of course, not all of them criticize Turks. but, it must be remembered that in the past, European countries helped pkk (which is a terroristic organization and the murderer of thousands of innocent children and people in Turkey) and they just didn't realize that a terrorist is always a terrorist until some pkk terrorists have killed some polices in Germany; then, many European countries decided to stop the activity of these pkk supporters. but, there are still some countries which let pkk broadcast a TV organization in their country while still pkk is killing innocent people in Turkey. Year by year, they informed the world that they want peace, after they increased themselves in number and in weapons, they started to kill innocent people again. So, i am asking now, why the Netherlands doesn't try to stop pkk activities in their country? when will they realize that terrorists aim at only one target and they hurt you if you cross on their way? thousands are dead because of pkk and will be, however, they can never reach what the very imaginary target they aimed at...

Today, if many Turkish people are too nationalist; the reason of this is only Europa. also, Europa hates nationalists much more, while Turks are being more nationalist day by day; so the end of this game never comes...

of course, i don't have a right to blame on all people that i criticized above. i hope we can find a way in real peace, not in fighting and not in criticizing dialogues each other just like now...

i am a positivist, i like Armenians, Europeans and all the other nations. and i am sorry about the event of Hrant Dink which was caused by some unimportant and stupid people... also, these people were terrorists, too..

I don't about people in general here, but some I know has spoken against Turks based on experience with a few of those that have come here. However, all I know that have been to Turkiye only have good things to tell about Turks and the country.

Anyone that, as kikdogman says, use religion as a reason to criticize a nations people probably do that out of lack of knowledge about Islam. Maybe out of fear of the unknown.

Well i am from the uk but of half tunisian origin and I think that Turkey is great. I love the people, the country, the culture and everything, as it is very similar to my own.

I think that people are still stuck with negative history about turkey and the otomans in their minds and wont change....but having heard turkish history from a turkish person i must say that alot of my perceptions have changed as they have really had alot of influence all over the world.

People seem to hate everything at the moment but they need to learn not base their opinions on the actions of a minority, most of whom aren't true turkish people anyway!

Nothings going to change my very high opinion so don't worry it's not everybody, and you should forget about the haters, you are from a beautiful place that has so much to offer in terms of culture and everything....i know i'm going back!

I think the truth about the genocide lies in encyclopedia, not in self published home page, you have link to. There are even web pages denying the killing of Jews in Holocaust, but not encyclopedias,

Reporters have been imprisoned and last one killed three days ago by only writing less of the truth that's in this little reference. Not a single Turkish top politician even attended the funera, that shows how much they care!

I (and most Europeans) do not value a country, where freedom is speech is not practised.

I dont think armenians killed a single Turkis diplomat before 1915.

How many terrorist you see in the stocpile of bodies?

I think the only thing we can agree on is that Turkey should not join European Union before having basic human rights for i.e. Armenians, Kurds and women and face its own history, instead of trying to rewrite it.
