I have to agree with Misanthropist above. There are many Russian women in and around my community and they are usually better dressed, made up, etc. on the average than there American born counterparts. You'll never see a Russian woman in public in pajama bottoms, with her fat belly hanging out, hair uncombed, etc. In Russia they teach etiquite in school, unlike here where people are encouraged to "express themselves" i.e. look like crap. |

Because they forgot to ask for your opinion on the issue.
Seriously though, stop generalizing - some women wear makeup, others don't. We are not a nation of clones.
Women that show a certain amount of interest in their appearance should be commended - it's better to see a woman with a bit too much makeup on than to constantly have to endure fat women in pajamas walking around in the frozen foods section. |

They wear make up to look beautiful! And please, don’t say negative things. Not all of them do. I am Russian and I limit my make up a lot. I just don’t like it. However, in Russia there are different standards. Women suppose to look beautiful, if you roll out of bed and just go to work – a big no-no! It is in the culture – you have to look good all the time! |

My girlfriend is Russian and she never wears any make up. She looks absolutely gorgeous without any. There is no point to generalize about all Russian women. It would be the same if asked why so many American girls wear make up |

First of all, visit Russia and then ask me that again, you probably wont. Im russian, I actually noticed American females wearing more make up here than there. Usally the ladies over 30s wear make up, but its not a lot. Some do, and so what, let them be women. I would rather be taking care of myself than not compared to some females here. |

In Soviet times, clothing and make-up choice was a main expression of the individual women. The expression continues now in Russia. Make up is an element of individual expresson. Many Russian women I have seen during visits to Russia use make up. Even in a small village they wear make-up. I would not call it much make-up. Most use it carefully to help bring out the best in facial features. Some over use the make-up and some use none.
The Russian women have as many different personalities as any USA women. |

To look pretty, the same reason women wear make up anywhere. |

russian women compete with each other far more than american women. They are very jealous. they are known as the Italians of the North. Very emotional, gossip about each other, notice every detail about other women. They dress hot and wear makeup to be hotter than the next women. Its not about impressing the men for the mens sake, its about impressing the other women. If a woman goes out in public not all dolled up , all the other women gossip and spread rumors and make up stories on why Svetlana looks like a bum. |

Ok I'm gonna list you the reasons why Russian women look good (some were try hard in the past but they now fully have the concept of fashion)
Russian women take care of themselves first and foremost thx to the 2nd world war. After the war for every 10 Russian women there existed only 2 men to choose from. Also prosecutions before and after the war allowed less men to survive than women. Men were at stake so women had to look good enough to attract them. Now, their style may not look good enough to a westerner (up until 10 years ago it did not at least) but in the process they learnt how it should be done. Also in a country where religion is opressed, people are able to express themselves better with clothing and make up. They wouldnt refrain from looking good since being pious is out of question. Another reason is their Northern culture. I find northerners generally more straightforward. (A Russian will always be more frank to you than an Italian, Greek or Turk) they are less likely to act hypocritical, and more likely to express themselves in a way they feel. Clothing and make up is the most crucial part of expressing oneself. And last but not least, there is this competition thing. Many women looking good (or in your terms, trying to look good) means the others should look good as well in order to take their lot from the pie. Tho as I say, as of recent years, Russian women are able to pull it off in terms of looking classy, unlike before. |

they are tacky and don't know it.
its an East-European fashion thing. Girls are not that bad looking in East Europe but they dress like prostitutes and think it is sexy.
They are desperate to attract a Western husband and get out of their hellhole of a country. |
