Circumcision is a traditional Jewish ritual (Briss), that has been carried into modern American medicine. You are not required to have your baby boys circumcised at birth in US hospitals and many pediatricians will tell you that it serves no purpose other than aesthetics. Russian culture is one of atheism (Soviet Union recognized no religions), and Christian orthodox churches. While many early Christians (converted Jews) still practiced the ritual of circumcision, the Apostle Paul argued that it was unnecessary to circumcise boys, that it was an outdated ritual of no spiritual significance after the coming of Christ. Most Jews still circumcise baby boys to this day (don't recognize Paul's teachings as overriding the Torah). Many Christians do as well, but mostly because of the presentation of the act by medical personnel, not because of any spiritual requirement or ritual.
I have four sons, none of which are circumcised. It has not presented any problems for us. We have not once regretted that decision. In fact, we often get praise from pediatricians when we move to a new town (former military, moved a lot) and they learn that we have chosen to decline what we see as a barbaric and unnecessary mutilation of boys. For those who see a spiritual significance in the ritual, fine, but if you're only doing because the doctor wants to do it ... ask yourself if it's really what you want. |

A better question to ask woud be "why does the US continue to be the only industrialized country that practices routine infant circumcision?"
80% of the world's men are intact. Not circumcising is normal. |

It is amazing! The real question why would anyone want to circumcise rather than why anyone would not!
I understand the trouble of of people in middle east, or africa where there is no water and a lot of dust/sand and therefore it is hard to maintain sufficient hygiene "down there" to prevent infection. In some tribes circumcision is a rite of passage for males.
None of these issues pertain to Russia or in fact the whole of Europe.
Why babies are circumcised in US?
The answer is : this barbaric tradition has been started by uptight humorless christian doctors who thought that circumcised males masturbate less. That was in 19th century. Nowadays people do it cuz everybody does. I asked a professor, a friend of mine, if he circumcised his boys. He said yes. I said why? And he said, dunno, cuz I'm circumcised.
Bonus anecdote: A Jewish woman is asked why male jews are all circumcised. She answers : "First of all it looks beautiful that way" |

I don't know...but in Europe Jews are the only people who Circumcise...
Maybe because Russians like Spanish don't want to place their children in a needless and painfull operation ??
In most Nordic countries it's banned - even for relegious regions I think !!
Russia is near Finland a Nordic country... that might be why =)
Edit... yes when their younger you do need to clean it... but I doubt if you didn't do it his penis would fall off o_O jajaajaja most young boys don't even wash once a week... I never use to when I was younger xD |

Circumcision began with the Jews...it is in the covenant that Gd made with Abraham. One of the most important rituals.
Muslims carry through with it, as well, because of their close connection to Abraham. That story is common to both religions as among the most important ones.
Christians...well, choose NOT to follow the Old Testament.
For a long time, especially during and after World War II, it was found that the uncircumcised men had more incidence of infection, especially those living in unsanitary conditions in Asia. (many were in internment camps and prison camps). Even during the Vietnam conflict, it was recognized that the uncircumcised men had more problems.
It also used to be true that there was a form of cancer that was more prevalent in men who hadn't been circumcised.
But these problems have become mostly a thing of the past. While it is a largely painless "operation", some doctors recommend AGAINST doing an operation that isn't necessary, and so many people in the US have chosen NOT to circumcise. I DO know one woman whose son had many infections, and HAD to have it done at the age of 8 months or so...she regretted not having it done at birth...at that age, it's more complicated, painful, and more likelihood of infection.
I also know someone who had a mohel do it (ritually for Judaism) and he botched it. She, too, had to re-do sometime before the first birthday, and it was a problem.
NO, the penis is NOT going to fall off, and if kept clean, shouldn't have any problems with infection, either...shouldn't. But there are cases when it IS indicated.
As for why the Russians don't do it? I can only say, as others have, that the US is long in changing such a tradition...still in the US, MOST parents choose to do it, because we have been taught that it's healthier, and I don't think that is really true anymore. I think It's up to the parents.
It WILL mean a bit more cleaning on your part. |

Jews and Muslims circumcise their male children.
It was the fashion in the late 40s in the UK to have male children 'topped and tailed' - tonsillectomy and circumcision.
Some women who are worried about not being able to gently smooth the foreskin back over their baby son's penis when bathing him, might still think that circumcision is best, however, beware, in this day and age, a young circumcised male might well be detained at an airport and suspected of being a terrorist. Absence of foreskin: suicide bomber!
I have a problem with Been There. If a doctor says that circumcision is recommended because the foreskin is too tight, then I would accept that. Religious preferences did not enter the question. |

Think about it this way. Are you living in the US or Russia? If you are living in the US then circumcise. If you are living in Russia, do not circumcise.
Russians do not circumcise because it is only a Jewish practice. Russians can't really answer your question because they do not know a thing about circumcision. The only thing that comes to mind when they hear that is..... isn't that what Jews do they cut their d*cks off or some sick mutilation practice. Russia's main religion is Orthodox Christian which is why they do not circumcise. It doesn't make sense that American christians circumcise because it is not a Christian practice. All Americans just happened to embrace a Jewish and Muslim practice for some unknown reason. American Christians circumcising their sons is what is really really unusual and weird. It's like them celebrating Hanukah instead...like okay. LOL. |

Make sure you explain to your husband that circumcision of boys are very important due to infections. Try searching literature on the internet about the importance of circumcision and showing it to him. |

I don't think its to do with the Jewish thing at all. Its probably due to frostbite. If you're circumcised and your **** gets exposed to minus 30'C weather for even 5 seconds then say goodbye to your ****. Uncircumcised guys however can even take a piss outside in that weather. |
