How would any tourist know if the army is brutal or not? You crack me up ole lady! I know this is foreign to Turkish citizens but the rest of the world uses their brain and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. |

There has been problems in the eastern part of Turkey for years - it's only now that it's become "news." The risk is no greater for the average tourist than it was last year, or the year before, or the year before that....
Bit like not going to New York because of the fires in California. |

That reminds me of a joke.
Two depressed gay men where detained by police at Yerevan airport having arrived from Glendale on suspicion of being suicide bummers.
(Thanx to dear friend Ishaq A for his wits & contribution..
I hope you don't mind me quoting from you, mate) |

Get a life. Turkey is as safe as a modern country can be.
I heard that PKK is just a bunch of terrorists. Are you trying to scare people off on purpose here? |

I believe it´s quite safe to go to Turkey as long as you don´t visit the northeast parts of the country, where the Kurds live. The tourist resorts are OK. If you think something terrible can happen when going to some new place, you can´t even open your own door! Have you heard that most accidents and other not so nice things, happen in your own home! |

If they cancelled it is only because of their ignorance. |

Turkey is much safer than the US. Trust me, it is.
Edit- Alana, have you ever been to Turkey AND the US? How would you know which one is safer if you've never visited? |

Do you have any concrete evidence proving your accusations? I bet no. The name you use here resembles the name of a TV station that supports a trecherous terrorist organization.
It is quite safe to travel to and in Turkey. You should know this better than tourists since you are (most probably) a Turkish citizen (of Kurdish ethnicity probably). If you are a Kurd from northern Iraq, then you should remember how Turkey opened its borders and protected you, gave you food and shelter when Saddam used chemical bombs on you. You should be thankful to Turkey. |

I've been to Turkey on 3 separate trips and loved the place and its people. I've been to Diyarbakir in the east and felt just as safe as in Istanbul. On one occasion I had a man come up to me and declare " I do not like George Bush!!" He wasn't threatening at all. I agreed with him and he looked confused. I wish I had bought the guy a drink. |

I am from the USA and just went to Istanbul. It was very safe and the residents of the city are very friendly. Even though many would discuss their displeasure with the US government and its inaction in Northern Iraq, the people always treated me cordially.
I felt very safe in Istanbul. It is far away from the Iraqi borders. Further, I must say I was very impressed by security in the city. The police were efficient, polite and professional. I had no problem with the police wanding my bag for explosives/metals when I entered the subway and airport. |

Yes, it's also not safe to go to the USA because they're in war with Iraq, ha?

I have been to Newyork city, Washington D.C and Chicago. Even today,Turkey is safer than those 3 cities USA. Ofcourse some people if they want to spent their holidays at the top of the mountains near Turkish and Iraq border where PKK is hiding, then they should cancell.
Duty and responsibility of Turkish army is to save Turkey and Turkish citizens . As a Turkish citizen there is no difference between a person of turkish origion and a person of kurdish origin. We are all brothers and sisters. Turkish Kurds are free they do not have to fight for it. |

Turkey is not safer then the US.
First off women who travel alone
to Turkey are at much higher risk
to be safe and if your gay its
best not to say it because if you
do your not safe either. The US
does not have these unsafe
circumstances....do some reading
and if you are still fearful don't go
you will only have a worse time then
what you would of had.
There are also terrorist attacks
on innocents from the PKK or
so they tell me. |

Yes, "the Turkish army is too brutal and the police forces are corrupted and infiltrated by Mafia!!" there is some truth in that but if you are just going there on holiday it shouldn't matter... and their foreign policy in Iraq is irrelevant... many people believe everything they see on TV and are scared of everything that they know nothing about.... paranoid...I travelled around Europe and I now find it boring and expensive.... you ahould travel outside the EU and see how people around the world live |
