There are third reasons:
1st: Would you want a powerful or a weak country to control that area, if you were the biggest power of the world?
2nd: The governors are trying to develop themselves (!), not the public. The only important thing is their money for them.
3rd: How can a country develop if it doesn't give importance to fine arts, education, science? How can the people develop unless they stop seeing the world in a religious way only without using their mind? (The governors know that so they use religion to control them) |

geographically Turkey is in a very sensitive location and has lotsa enemies therefore the high percentage of the tax money goes to military in order to defend their borders
you do the math |

the population is also very high.
moreover, i strongly believe that Turkey can possibly be a rich country, because of its resources etc.
however, the people in power, not to mention that they have islamic roots, seem more concerned about the headscarf ban in turkey and ar**se licking the EU countries, rather than how to tackle the unemployment problems and etc. |

Turkey was in shambles after its foundation. We were a poor, decimated population, that lost a significant portion of its people to war and immigration.
Similar Mediterreanean countries weren't in a better position. Greece, Italy, Spain were all poor. While EU was helping others develop its economy, granting money, giving loans, Turkey further had to spend a lot of money and lost a lot of its people to war with terror. |

Firstly, Turkey was occupied for a brief period after WWI,in Constantinople (now Istanbul), but Ataturk (the father of the Republic) drove the occupiers away and united the Turkish together to form the Republic of Turkey.
I wouldn't necessarily define Turkey as a "developing" country, because a developing country generally gives the idea that its living standards aren't up to snuff, it's not quite urbanized yet, and it is technologically behind other countries - all of which are both accurate and inaccurate in Turkey's case.
It really depends on which part of the country you're in. The eastern part of Turkey (or as I like to call it, "Middle Eastern Turkey") is definitely not as developed as western Turkey (or as I like to call it, "European Turkey"). There are several issues with the Turkish govt. and Kurdish people, as well as with other minorities (to a far lesser extent). Istanbul is arguably the most populous city in all of Europe, and is a major cultural and economic centre in Eurasia - it bridges a gap between Europe and Asia, and that alone makes it significant. Despite its geographic location between the Balkans and the Middle East, Turkey's policies are largely aligned with those of the Western World (they are a secular state, membership in NATO, attempts to join EU, etc). This has at times made it a pivotal ally of the Americans.
So basically, Turkey isn't exactly as developed as other advanced economies (UK, USA, Canada, Scandinavian countries, etc), but it isn't a good example of a developing country either. There's a term for that, a "Newly Industrialized Economy", an economy that isn't super developed but getting there.
And indeed, Turkey has made marvelous progress throughout its time. There are still things they need to fix before they are EU material (allowing more freedom of speech, freedom of religion, etc) but it's trying, and I'm sure they can do it. Hell, I bet by the end of the century, Turkey will achieve far more than anybody could have imagined. |

You cannot compare Turkey with other countries. Turkey was located in very important and strategic position. It is between asia and europe, Islam and Christianity, west and east . Turkey has to satisfy all this conditions. There are so many internal and external problems for Turkey. However,Believe me, If Turkey were a christian country, It would be the biggest country in the world now. I am deeply believe in my country,It is not so far to be the biggest one for us. |

turkey's economic system was regulated economy until 80s and regulated economy never helped any country.and because of turkeys position it sometimes has conflicts with its neighbours sometimes until 1998 it had conflicts with russia but not now. i don't think its right to tell turkey isnt developed because its muslim or it would be better if turkey was christian, also saudi arabia is a rich country according to imf even if their economy's rise and fall depends on oil prices in world markets also usa helped european countries after ww2. also know rich countries help other countries economically like poland after change in government type most of their national debt was cancelled unlike russia after communism no country borrowed money.turkey used advices of imf also never helped any country imf always adviced countries the same things no matter how countries conditions are. |

I think it is because the majority of it, especially the eastern part, isn't developed or "modern" Turkey, which I love, has only a few big cities that are "modern” Istanbul, Ankara etc. It is unfortunate but it is probably the same reason that Turkey won't be in the EU. |
