I don't know about the Pakistani flag, but let me give you some idea about the Turkish flag:

Meaning of the flag
It's very difficult to explain the real meaning of a flag; there are legends, actual stories, and outright misinformation about the reason of certain colors or designs were put on national flags. Also individuals may have their own interpretation of their own national flag. Religious symbolism can also be expressed via color, such as the crescent moon which is a traditional Islamic symbol.

Historical facts:
"Red has been prominent in Turkish flags for 700 years. The star and crescent are Muslim symbols, but also have a long pre-Islamic past in Asia Minor. The basic form of the national flag was apparently established in 1793 under Ottoman Sultan Selim III, when the green flags used by the navy were changed to red and a white crescent and multi-pointed star were added. The five-pointed star dates from approximately 1844. Except for the issuance of design specifications, no change was made when the Ottoman Empire became the Republic of Turkey and the Caliphate (religious authority) was terminated by Ataturk. Many traditions explain the star and crescent symbol. It is known that Diana (Artemis) was the patron goddess of Byzantium and that her symbol was a moon. In 330, the Emperor Constantine rededicated the city - which he called Constantinople (today's Istanbul) - to the Virgin Mary, whose star symbol was superimposed over the crescent. In 1453 Constantinople (Istanbul) was captured by the Ottoman Turks and renamed Istanbul, but its new rulers may have adopted the existing emblem for their own use"

"The most accepted legend of the flag in Turkey is that in a pool of blood of Turkish warriors, there was a reflection of the crescent moon and a star. Three theories are:

In the year 1071, after the Battle of Manzikert and the defeat of the Byzantine army, the Seljuk Khan, Alp Arslan was roaming the battlefield where he saw the reflection of the crescent moon and the star on a pool of blood of Turkish warriors. After he saw this image, he decided that this would be the flag representing the Turks.

After the Battle of Kosovo on July 28 1389, Murad I was assassinated and on that night there was a unique moment of Jupiter and the Moon next to each other. If one considers this sight on a pool of blood, the current structure of the Turkish flag can be seen easily. One problem with this theory is that the Battle of Kosovo actually took place over a month earlier - on the 15th of June in the Julian Calendar (23rd of June in the Proleptic Gregorian Calendar).

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the modern Republic of Turkey, walking on a battlefield one night after a victorious battle in the Turkish War of Independence, saw the reflection of the star and crescent formation in a large pool of blood on the rocky hill terrain of Sakarya.

A dream of the first Ottoman Emperor in which a crescent and star appeared from his chest and expanded, presaging the dynasty's seizure of Constantinople.[4]
A crescent and star were spotted on the night of the fall of Constantinople to Mehmet II in 1453.

They look similar because they both have on them the islamic symbol of the crescent moon and the star. It symbolises their connection to Islam and the muslim world.

Turkish flag has nothing to do with Islam. Firstly just the crescent was being used then the star has been added.And in Ottoman time we have been the warriors of Islam so Turkish flag has been thought as a Müslüman symbol.

U see where is this design comes from, other hand some answerers telling the truth. Crescent and star design was a Ottoman Empire’s flag, many country copying it from them .. incluted Turks.

But that design doesn’t belongs Ottoman’s, they took the design from Byzantium Empire when they fall, they use it at the coins and flags because honour the moon-goddess Hecate.

In 330 AD first Christian Empire Constantine added the Virgin Mary's star to the flag .. after that people can see moon goddess and Virgin Mary at same scene, at a flag.

.. If u look at ancient Byzantium flag u can see it with your own eye’s .. today we still use Byzantium flag, after 1000 year.

The crescent moon and star was not completely abandoned by the Christian world after the fall of Constantinople. To date the official flag of the Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem had those signs.

Crescent and Star invated by Byzantium, Ottoman’s took it from them and other muslim countries took it from Ottomans. Sounds like a olympic flag race isn’t?

and background .. some flag's had "green" background, green means Islam .. they are Islamic based countries that's why they use green background.

we use red, color of human blood .. we aren't islamic country, a secular one. we are turks first, then muslim or jew .. turks first.

We draw our history with blood, we had a soil to live .. because we paid the bills with blood. That's why our flag had red color, not green.

p.s : other hand many people thought they ( Crescent and star ) represent the Islam .. rofl .. No Sir .. they aren't represent the Islam .. they represent the Ottoman Empire after Ottoman's they can thought they represent the Islam but isn't.

The recent Turkish flag have been using about 900 years by turks since ottoman empire established. Moon and star represent İslam ,thats why they decided a flag like with moon and star..the infuence of ottoman emprire effected the whole islamic world just like pakistan so they had a similiar flag.

To atrak : Osmanlı devletinde 2 bayrak vardı.Biri hilafet sancağı diğeri devlet sancagı. hilafet sancagı yeşil, devlet sacagı hilafet sancagıyla karıştırılmasın die kırmızı renkti.Şuan Türkiye Cumhuriyetinin kullandıgı bayrak , osmanlının devlet sancağıdır. sadece belli bir standarta oturtulmuş halidir. "Zemini kırmızıdır,cunku biz once turkuz,sonra musluman veya yahudiyiz" gibi cumleler bu bilgi ışığında abzurt ve yanlış kaçmaktadır.çünkü bayrak butunuyle islami simgeler olan ay ve yıldızdan oluşmuştur.turklugumuzu ön plana cıkaracaz derken lutfen yanlış bilgiler vermeyelim.
