Why is it that when i travel through Europe, i get more people snubbing me when i am with my British fiance?

And its not because he is a male, it is because he is British. I have always been one to travel & i traveled all over Europe with a group of American guys before & we only got snubbed a few times. But with my fiance, we get snubbed almost by everyone. I get it less than him though. This contradicts the stereotype that everyone hates Americans. They seem to hate the British more. Why is this?

Wow, this is the third question of yours I have answered on a similar topic. Beginning to think you are a little bit paranoid.

I am English. I live in Russia for a large part of the year, have lived in Estonia and Poland and have travelled around plenty of Europe to Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Ukraine, Belarus, Cyprus, Austria, Germany, France, Spain and Ireland. I have yet to have a negative experience based on my nationality. You must either be fatally unlucky or as I said earlier, paranoid.

I am British and have travelled to many countries all over the world, many of which through Europe. I have never been snubbed, and I am now 25.

It may not be that he is British, it may be his persona or the way he looks/talks. I find that with my 6ft 2in 17st frame with a shaved head, I got looked at differently to my 6ft 14st friend with his long black locks of hair. This is because I look like trouble with the shaved head, and the British are well known for their yobbery.

I have also noticed that Football related clothing will attract more unwanted snubbing as it gives the impression that you are a British Football Hooligan. Unfortunately, this is the world we live in.

I'm not saying that you fella is a yobbo, but I am saying that the reputation (especially through Europe) is that the Brits are the biggest trouble makers going. I would suggest he doesn't take it personally ... or is it you that is uncomfortable with the situation?

Respect will come with age too, so if you are young, this is also the expected outcome.

part of it is because of english ( and lately scottish ) football hooliganism and lager lout behaviour whilst abroad by the mindless few and part of it is the old impression of britain as a colonial or empire power and for some our close alliance with the usa.

Can't say I have experienced this and I live in Germany. Steve T makes a good point. I also think we have problems within the EU. As a member state we opt out of just about everything important the EU does while trying to stick a spanner in the works for all the other countries. Our reputation is that of constant complaining. Which as a nation, I am afraid, is true.

English football hooligans are notorious for their rioting, this might have something to do with it.

I'm not saying that your fella is either English or a hooligan (I did note that you describe him as 'British'), but many people are hazy about the difference between English and British, and only hear English being spoken, and don't know it well enough to distinguish the accents.

The best thing to do is remain friendly and serenely ignore all snubs, and be persistent in getting what you want.

A recent poll in Europe voted the British the worst holiday makers, see attached. Added to the recent history of football hooliganism and foreign policy decisions I'm not surprised. Also, the British love to complain. Its their worst trait. I think even they will admit this is true.

But still, your boyfriend should be judged on who he is, not all those who went before him

Both countries operate an unethical foreign policy, invading other countries, murderig civilians etc. But the Americans at least do this to benefit and enrich themselves. We just do it to pander to the Americans. That is even more loathsome

Rowan
I think you're imagining that dear. I've travelled all over Europe lots of times and never experienced anything like that.Maybe they're not talking to you because they don't want to intrude on the privacy of a couple, or they talk to you on your own more because they're hoping it leads somewhere.

Alex
Because the UK have now surpassed the US will loutish behavious! No longer are Brits considered well mannered and polite - thanks to the football lunatics, our government and our foreign policy, the British are now top of the most hated list.

And lets face it who can blame them!

I am English and have lived and worked in lots of countries (Sweden, Madeira, Portugal, Spain, Cyprus, Turkey) and been all over Europe on holiday and only really noticed a problem with the Spanish (and only in certain places). I agree that it is probably your boyfriend they are snubbing as opposed to where he comes from.

Strange.I get the opposite.I'm American born and London raised....people kiss my tootsies...maybe it's HIM,not his nationality....!

chevvyl
Your taking their behaviour personally. All people nowadays are more serious, especially when on the move. There thoughts are on their work, home life, whats for tea, a thousand things so they have no time for niceties with perfect strangers. Just keep smiling and say hello, if they "snub"you ,it`s their loss. If I see you I won`t snub you. Who knows maybe they feel inferior to Americans and the British.Who knows? more to the point, who cares?
