Why is most Turkish people, are against the wearing of Turban. or any other religious head covering??? |
I for one totally disagree banning officially or legally prohibiting any clothing item, providing it is worn appropriately and respectable, Turban is one ,you can't get more respectable than that, carsaf is not disrespectful piece of clothing,
I don't like them , for the reason, our beautiful girls hide behind them , that is my only reason, should it not be a choice for the individual ????? Additional Details Many thanks for your in put ,
I can't say i was surprised by your answers, it came as no shock, i expected some answers like it ,
I still can't understand why it would make any difference
A item of clothing . Providing it is worn with in the dress code parameters
i.e. decent, generally accepted standards of morality or respectability,
then i can't see any harm done to offend the general public,
Some of you suggested, we don't want to be like the Iranians , but that is exactly where we are heading, if we are to ban officially or legally prohibit people from wearing clothing of there choice. Dictating to people what to wear and what not to wear.
Do we want to go down that road, and do what Iranians did, dictate to it's citizens what to wear , and what not to wear.
Freedom of choice should be left up to people, and not have Big brother dictating ,
we can't be a nanny state,
if we can't trust our people to choose a simple thing as clothing to wear. turban or any head |

Any individual has the right
to make their own choice.
Taking away their right of
choice is oppression.
It is so predictable to
see some who are for this
type of oppression.. They
really believe this is a
quick fix to the oppression
women have felt for over a
1000 years.
Free the women by freeing their
minds instead of taking away
their freedom of expression. |

I am against it in schools etc. its not a choice of individual most of the time unfortunately....also our country is very close to some Arabic countries and that's why I see it as danger,
We are Turks we were Turks before Islam as well we do not wear such clothes I find it against my culture as well, Turban is an Arabic cover which has got nothing to do with Islam, it doesn't say it in the book to wear it...
so what is going on, think what real matter is that to choose do you wanna look like Arabs or do you wanna look like Turks...
I wanna look like a Turk and I do and I want all my nation to stay that way.. |

The very postulate of your question is WRONG:
Majority of Turkish people (unfortunately) support the idea that women should cover their heads
SECONDLY, even YOU feel like saying "...providing it is worn appropriately and respectable" --> i.e. you ADMIT there shjould be a limit.
As a matter of fact that's how it should be: SOME LIMITS..
But what you find appropriate and respectful may not be appropriate and respctful for others. WHAT THEN?
It's a very well known FACT that the headcover is a POLITICAL MANIFESTATION. And you cannot go free with some political manifestations which defy the very legitimacy of the public authority.
For instance you cannot wear a t-shirt with a swastika in Germany!
Zaten cogunluk olup yobaz tahakkümü kurmak suretiyle laik ve modern Türk insanlarını boguyorsunuz!
Bir de magdur edebiyati yapip "Niye cogunluk bizim gibi fasist olmadi? Nicin kadinlari zincirlemek ve onlari ikinci sinif insan yapmak yolundaki fasist istegimize destek vermiyorsunuz?" anlamina gelecek sözlerle biz 'aydinlik Turkiye'ye inanan' insanlarin zekasina hakaret etmeyin lutfen.
Kadinlarini özgür birakmayan bir toplum asla özgür olamaz! Ama sittimin yobazlari bunu nereden anlasin? |

I can't talk on behalf of all Turkish people but let me tell you my opinions :
I am not against people with turban, scarf, hey, they can even walk around in Budist ropes if they wish. What I am against is the risk of that type of religious symbol clothing being mandatory like it happened in Iran.
I also have other concerns;
Did it ever occurred to you that the university students of today will be the teachers and doctors in the future. What would you do if a female doctor with highly religious beliefs and a turban doesn't want to attend your life threatening wound -lets say- in your private areas because it is against her religious beliefs to see another men other than her husband naked? See, it is not only a issue of a piece of cloth, it is the mentality behind it. In fact, that is a good debate matter.
Carsaf - or burka -as it is more widely known with this name in the rest of the world- however brings another risk in nowadays world which is the risk of being used in terrorism and crime; Anyone can hide behind a burka-or a veil, as a matter of fact- and they become "invisible" crime-wise. Now, please tell me how can you identify a terrorist or a murderer or a robber if she/he is in a burka? You can't even tell the gender of the suspect if she/he is completely covered. Even a turban makes a woman difficult to get identified in these circumstances.
I live in Kuwait which is known to have a semi-Sharia law system depending on an Islamic Monarchy. The burka and the veil are banned because of security purposes EVEN HERE.
In summary, that much coverage isn't only a matter of threat to secularism in Turkey but also a matter of word-wide, national and personal security.

In simple terms, the main reason why a Muslim woman 'must' wear a turban is to avoid other men being sexually attracted than her husband.
This perception of women AND men is simply not acceptable. As a man, I can't agree that according to this rule I am in a kind of general suspicion that I get horny whenever I see the hair of a woman. Besides that, I can't see any problem why I shouldn't like a woman and her hair when I see one. What's wrong with that? Do women become sex objects when they don't hide themselves behind the burka or cover their hair? What kind of perception of women is this?
The main reason why I'm against the turban is in the religion itself as you can see.
But there are more reasons...
The social (backward thinking) and the political (Islam as a political ideology) reasons are also questionable. The social rules installed for a primitive Arabic society of the 7th Century can't possibly be the rules of a modern society in the 21st Century. And Islam doesn't have any answer how to rule a country in our times.
In my opinion, religion must be considered most of all as a spiritual thing. Therefore, it's private. I don't accept any religious rule forcing other people how they should behave. Those rules are in the law and law can always be changed by the people when they are not accurate. |

Uhm
ümmetçi boys are talkin about freedom again :=)
Most of Turkey's population is muslim and they are secular at the same time.
How do u think that happens? Because of Secularism.
Secularism has got some principles.. Like totally banning religion from State Management and politics where you have to apply some strict rules in order to create a secular society.
IT is very well-known that Islam was not so succesfull to distinguish between the religion and the politics, Thus, only a secular system where majority is muslim can be successful and a modern society. |

People like you insist on not understanding that turban, as a problem, is a women's rights issue, not a freedom or religious issue.
Did you read the news about a guy taking his girlfriend to a walk ON A LEASH in GB?
You can see this as a freedom issue, because the girl has the right to take off the leash when she wants. Not so with covered girls and ladies in patriarchal, ultra-religious families.
That is the whole point. Do we let men suppress ALL women in the society, or do we create freedom pockets for suppressed women, too.
Edit: Because Islamist maniacs throw nitric asid on open women, but even the maniacs among laicists would be struck with horror at the idea. Look at the histories of Iran, Algeria, and recently Iraq. Look at how Islamist politics ended up with Islamist regimes in those countries. Shall we talk about freedom of headscarves NOW?
European politicians supported Tayyip Erdogan against laicists. Don't they know that Islamist maniacs will target them next? Who do they support NOW?

HEADCOVER = SWASTIKA
that's for sure.. The European Court for Human Rights DECREED for that.
There's no doubt about it
Only, SWASTIKA was the symbol of NAZIs
whereas headcover is the symbol of political Islam
(both are fascism)
stupid like alana davarro cannot understand it. May be because they are also racists.
but here's what happens when you encourage the fascists

Hijab is not a disrespectful clothing, and is neither respectful.
Surly, well-educated women won't find any need of using the hijab in 21st century and in the today's countries.
Once - 150 years ago - there was an Iranian poet (Iraj Mirza) who wrote lots of poems for criticizing the hijab and representing it as a symbol of backward views and Islamic fundamentalism. Imagine it was 150 years ago!!! When Iran was ruled by the hard Islamic Qajar faction.
And there is still this problem in Muslim countries!
Supporting hijab or not is not the problem of secularism, it's about education.
Take two Muslim countries as example: Iran and Turkey.
Turkey is secular, Iran is not. But in both the educated women and girls won't choose hijab as a "must". |

Why was religious clothing prohibited in the first place? I guess because someone felt the need to fight one rule with another. In this case religious norms were replaced with secular norms. As a result a society based on religious dogma was replaced by an open secular society.
Indeed, when you compare Turkey to countries like Iran, Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan (at the time of the talibans) - well, the comparison speaks for itself. Does it mean, that Turkish people are irresponsible infidels? No, I guess not. As one of the answerers already said - religious beliefs are a private thing, not a declaration. Religion is also nothing to be associated with fashion. Basically, you can wear a head scarf because of social rules and still hate it (especially in hot weather). Also, wearing a scarf does not guarantee the person is a believer.
So, the prohibition in fact prevents the imposition of religious rules on the state and its citizens and, therefore, protects secularism.
If we honestly consider real life - are you sure that if there is no ban, the families of many women would not require them to wear hijabs or anything else to cover themselves? Because they want to show to others how especially pious these women are? Do you really think that every woman would be completely free to choose whether to cover herself or not? If the answer is "no" then the ban is still needed. |

Turkish elitists are afraid of resemble with Iran. Actually, Turkish modernization is long process. on the other hand, headscraft is religious rights and it is also human right. so, there is big debate in Turkey. For me, Islam must be re interpreted by intellectuals. because, it does not fit modern society. Headscraft came from prophet Mohammed's era and we don't know how was conditions for women. some of intellectuals say that there was vulgarity against women and prophet mohammed wanted to protect Muslim women in this way. now, there is no insult any women. so, why headscraft ? Nevertheless, headscraft is still going on traditional religious clothes
the most important things about headscraft is symbol of radicalism that secularists are so afraid of this kind of interpreting. therefore, traditional religious headscraft is added in this category. so, we could not solve this problem who is radical and who is moderate? |

Well I am not against prohibiting the turban (or other head covering religous items)
Think of a sikh you need a turban if you are going to stay a proper sikh,
For example the muslim women use a scarf (burkha) to cover there heads, there is no problem to do this but the people who want to stop this should think again,
This is a religous continental piece of clothing, it is not illegal,
But turkish citizens change your mind, please or people can start taking legal action. |
