Because most countries in Europe have more sensible taxation policies than the UK. In the UK ordinary unleaded petrol has 53.65p per litre of Fuel Duty, and diesel has 56.94p per litre; then there's 17.5% VAT on top of the fuel duty, so there's around 61 - 65p in tax even before you've paid for getting the oil out of the ground, transporting it to the refinery, refining the oil, transporting it to the petrol station, paid the government of the originating country, and the profit levels of everybody in the supply chain (and there's not much profit for the actual retailers, even though the oil companies make billions in profits) - and there's 17.5% VAT on top of all those costs, too! |
