Because when all the nations under the ottoman empire were fighting against it for independence the kurds were fighting for the ottomans. Now they try to catch up.

because the British, American and French governments made a deal with the new Turkish government after the fall of the Ottoman Empire... and it still stands today. The British people wanted to put Iraq where it is today, but the Turkish people did not think it was a good idea to have Kurdish lands in Iraq. So, eventually they decided to let the Kurdish people in certain cities near the Turkey/Iraq border vote on which country they would rather live in. Some voted for Iraq, some for Turkey. These elections finalized what parts of the Kurdish lands would be in which countries. The parts in Iran weren't involved in this though...

so anyway... Turkey only agreed to allowing the Kurdish lands to be in Iraq if the US, France and England signed a deal to never allow the Kurdish people to have their own state. (Remember... the Turkish people didn't want to seperate the Kurdish people in to two different countries - but keep them all in Turkey). So, legally... that deal still stands today.

It's kinda complicated now with the war.

Because in the history, Kurd tribes never reached the population that require to support hierarhical government and organized army and structural production. Those tribes never came together to build a nation. They were always separated big families in competition. They even speak different versions of Kurdish. All in their history, those tribes were under rule of diffrerent states.
It's may be not fair. But this is the rule of human societies and being a state. To form a nation you need hierarchical government, organised army, single language, common will or target, structural production, and many more.
Finally, after the first World War, middle-east reformed, new countries arose and borders are drawn. Turkey and Iraq was founded. And ever competing Kurd tribes divided at least to 3 region according where they live, inside Turkey, Iraq and Iran.
Kurds were not yet considered to fullfill requirements of a free state. Pitty. Unfair. But its the fact.
There is no supreme-jury distributes state permisions... If you have no leader and community (common will) you cannot get it.

Now, Kurds reached the population requirements under Turkey, Iran and Iraq, and with help of USA reformed a hierarchical government in Iraq in theory (or only in northern Iraq in practice). Will is increasing and some Kurds come together, but not all and majority!!!Because they do not have yet a common leader, single language and common will, it is impractical to form a free Kurdistan. Even its founded it may fail quickly and can be taken over again by surrounded states.

I think you must exploit the northern Iraq formation. I believe its the only possibility and you need to proove that you deserve a state. Collect all Kurds into this region (if you can!) from Turkey, from Iran etc. Let them join in single leadership and common target. I think it's extremely chalenging... But if it cannot be done, you must accept living as tribes, not as nation!

I myself is living in another country than mine and I am very happy with it! I do not care if my family has a nation or state... We are living in free world. Everybody is free to move anywhere they like to live. And all ground of earth is distributed already... Last piece was luckily taken by Jews... Sorry...

The old Kurdistan, just like Western Armenia, had been separated from Safavid Persia and attached to Ottoman Empire, when Sha'ah Esmaeel Safavi (of Persia) lost the war to Sultan Murat.
Since most of Kurds were Sunni Muslims, just like Turks, they were in better situations and weren't suffering as much as Armenians, Assyrians and Greeks, and because of that Kurds were united with Turks.

Ottoman empire failed in a situation that more than 90% of the Christian population was wiped out, and now the only noticeable non-Turk ethnic group were Kurds.

Up to this, we don't see any problem among Kurds and Turks, but the problem raised when modern Turkey (Mr. Ataturk) decided to make a 100% Turkish country.
They called Kurds "mountain Turks"!!!!!!!!!
Kurdish language was forbidden and these actions made them fight for freedom and separation.
