it`s not named after a bird. The word Turkiye does not refer to a bird in any language. The word Turkey is just a result of the English idiocy on the other hand. It has nothing to do with Turks. |

Turkey is not called "Turkey" in Turkish. We call it Turkiye. It's just that the US decided to change the name to Turkey, because it was, I guess, easier to pronounce. This hasn't been the first time they've changed country's names. For example, Italia is Italy and Brasilia is Brazil. |

It wasn't named after a bird. It's really a shame that it wasn't taught in school at where you're at but if you follow the link they gave you later, you will have an idea. It's only by sheer coincidence that the country originally called in their native tongue "Turkiye" ended up as being misnored as the bird turkey when translated into English by some who don't know much about geography.
I remember teaching this to a group of seven year olds last December. FYI- Do you know that other countries don't call the USA, USA? Take France for example, they call the USA Etats Unis (Do you know in some languages etats means poo?) I'm sure they're laughing their butts off with that, Turkey calls it Amerika Birleşik Devletleri and the Russians refer to it as Соединённые Шта́ты Аме́рики, США.
Hope you catch the drift. |

Umm, it's not named after the bird. The country is named after the people.
P.S. the people are not named after the bird either. It's just a coincidence. Like in turkish, egypt also means corn and Turkey does not mean turkey. |

The name of the country is Turkiye and it comes from the Turks who were living in asia, and came to anatolia centuries ago. |

In the English language, the bird is (erronously) called after the country, believing that that was the origin of the bird; in the same way that in Turkish the bird is called "hindi" after the country "Hindistan" (India) believing that the bird came from there. They were both wrong. |

it is not named after a bird. We have a bird that is our national bird. There is a difference. Also, every state has a state bird and flower. Our national bird was almost a turkey in honor of thanksgiving!! okay a little edit here. I thought you were talking about the united states. |

I've researched on this topic before and i'm glad to be answer this to u too, here it is:
The British people after defeating Ottoman Empire made a lot of countries in the middle east and one of them called Turkey, casue the Turkish soldjers always were running away and get the famous Chicken name called Turkey (Bird name).
then after they name it that mean Tukish peopel are like chickens for the same similarity with chicken bird Turkey.
One of the European someday said that we should name this country to "Donkey" cause they are more like it than chicken. |
