to pump the water out. they are below sea level there. that shows you how much they struggled to have some land. kinda hard to get dry land in some places where the royalty claimed all the good land. that is why most people came to america centuries ago. land and a chance to live even though it was tough. greedy people and overpopulation spoil things.

I assume that there are a lot, because as the ground is flat, there is plenty of wind around to make them work. Secondly, a lot of the land was reclaimed from the sea and probably still needs to be pumped out. The windmills may be pumps. Hope this helps.

The windmills also work for a better form of getting energy.
