We call it İstanbul. You may call what ever you want...

its so simple why do you say New York city but not New Amsterdam or skopje instead of "uskup" or komotini not "gumulcine" this city has many names it's just one of them actually ottoman empire didnt change this name because Sultan Mehmet the conqueror declared himself as the emperor of eastern romans (like greeks) we've been using "istanbul" as the official name after the creation of the turkish rebublic in 1923 it's changed in 1930 truly
Edit: to vasiliki i have same feelings about one of your cities which is my hometown, the point is we call our turkish city names only in our language Not for international saying

constantinople was conquered 600 years ago and bcame istanbul
it has been called istanbul for 600 years
Trotsky vs Kerensky- НекIо!
Because that's how the owners of the city, i.e. Turks, choose to call it.

The origin of Istanbul is "İslam bol" which is "plentiful islam" in Turkish. This is named after the Turks get the city from cristians..
