Why the two NATO countries Greece and Turkey don't create a bi-national airforce in the Aegean? ? |
That would probably calm down everyone, especially if the commandant is neither Greek nor Turk ( he would be from another NATO country).
I'm asking the question, because France and Germany have a bi-national military force, and everyone know what those both countries went through in the past ( 1870 war, WW1, WW2 ) Additional Details hmm, maybe the proper word should be " dual-national", " mixed-national", instead of "bi-national" (my english sucks, sorry ) |

@ Kay: "Its such a shame that two modernized European allies cannot come to an agreement regarding air space"
Is Turkey a modern European country? Since when?
The answer to your question is really simple:
There is no need for such an air-force since the Aegean is constituted by 70% Greek Air-Space. The other 30% is international air-space and if a Turkish aircraft wanted to fly there it should take permission from the FIR of Athens since it should cross Greek air-space.
Problem is that Turkey doesn't recognize the FIR of Athens because they claim that current sea borders in Aegean are illegal. They forget of course that they officially recognized current sea borders when they entered the UN.
The above is valid today that Greece acknowledges that there is 6 NM area around each Greek island. If Greece acknowledges 12 NM (as it is very LEGAL to do) then there will be no international air-space in the Aegean. Turkey stated that if that happens it would be a "casus belli" (war cause)!
Is that a behavior of a modern European country?
Also, don't try to find other cases around the world with same problems. You won't find any because Turkey exist only in our region. |

For the purpose of what? If the common people still have bad feelings towards each other, how do you think macho men in the military would take such a decision.
The army is full of nationalist guys on both sides who regard each other as thier rivals,so that just wouldnt work.
The French and Germans have a allied airforce because they control europe in the first place! Its just for show. |

Its such a shame that two modernized European allies cannot come to an agreement regarding air space. I'm a British Turk, and id die for England like id die for my ethnic country...so ill be as unbiased as possible.
Both sides are too damn stubborn to agree upon ANYTHING, let alone something that involves sharing something military related. Bloodly conflicts that have occured in the past 40 years are yet still plaguing the generations, and both countries find it hard to keep mutual respect with each other let alone further tightening and securing relations.
Hopefully sometime soon they will have leaders that are far less stubborn and narrow minded and eventually form an agreement of some kind that will settle and put to rest past hatreds and current disagreements. |

Because they have traditionally hostile relations and are more likely to war against each other than ally for anything. |

Like Zoi said, because then USA, Israel and Russia won't be able to sell two seperate sets of military equipment to two different states. If peace is maintained in the Aegean, they won't be able to sell even one set!
I wish we spent that money for education. |

Zoi ((Ζωή))

Just bear in mind that Americans earn a lot from the weapon and military equipment that they sell to both of us.
And Aegeum has an immediate connection to the Middle East and the Middle East problem and Oil.
So, maybe it happens sometime, when oil won't be so important. |

It's a perfect idea if the bi-national air force was created to fly over continental Turkey. This would show a good will and honest intentions. |

There is a problem between Greeks and us at Aegean islands . Greeks say this islands (continental shelf ) sea and air border is also belongs to us. But Islands are so close to Turkey. This means their sea and air border is on Turkey. We cant let any Greek jets flaying on us .
At the agreement of Turks and Greeks for this islands ;
Greeks must not have any soldiers at these islands. But they have a lot of military bases there. This means they are not thinking friendly.
Turkey have the biggest army around it and also a big air-force on Aegean . For example we have 2. biggest F-16 jets after America and they have systems to attack at night. |
