In Turkish , Greek and Arabic music have some special notes.
If we look to the piano between ( C # or D b ) there is only one one note . (It's black) . In that music type (to play it with piano ) you need 2 or 3 black notes.
So when we listen them their sounds same or similar.
And rhythms are also similar . Like 9 / 8 .
Similarity between Arabic and Flamenco is rhythm . But notes are Little bit different.
El musica esta biem. sorry for my Spanish. |

for centuries, because greek and turkish nations lived together inside the same empire's boundaries as many other nations, these people's culture in many issues has been similar. however, classic greek music and classic turkish music are different. there are also other music types which are unique itself in the world which u can never listen in another country. but, in general, a type of music of these countries sounds like similar in other country ten thousand times more than a music such as in the usa...
in fact, recently, globalism made people similar in many things. so in every country, pop and rock music has been much more impressive than any other types, so i dont know any other countries but so has these in turkiye...
i also think that not only greece and turkiye but also spain and italy are similar to each other. i mean these four countries' people have common qualities as we are all mediterranean...
best wishes... |

Greeks and Turks lived in same empire (Ottoman Empire) for 400 years. Both cultures highly influenced each other. It's not only the music, the cultures, the food etc. are very similar. Even the people of both countries look alike. Despite the religion, Arabic culture does not have much ifluence on Turkish culture.
Actually many Turks dislike Arabs and putting the Turks in the same category with Arabs may come as an insult to some people. (Not me, I respect all cultures)
Considering our neighbors Greeks are the closest to us.
They are a great nation with a great history (ancient Greece for example) and it's an honor to be influenced by those people.
It's the time to focus on similarities, we're living in the 21st century. There's no time for animosity aynmore.
There's no superiority in cultural exchange. Influence is what makes our cultures rich. |

I dont think that there is an influence from both sides to each other because we have the same ethnic culture such as ; we both drink raki , eat musakka , kofte , cacik etc. If you visit Bodrum you will see even the houses are the same as in ones in Greece. |

If the Greeks were muslims and talked turkish ( or if the Turks were christan and talked greek), it would be impossible to guess who is Greek or who is Turk...
The only differences who exist between them are only religion and language.
Sometimes, when you hear the beginning of a song, you can know the nationality of the singer only when he starts to sing... |

it could be both , but more likely it is the greeks infuenced by the turks.
the turks ruled the ottoman empire which spanned three continets and was the most powerful nation in the world for nearly a millenium.
greece was also under their control so it is more likey that greeks are influence by turks. |

You would find a common theme in music not only in Greece and Turkey but also in Israel and in the countries north of Greece. For those of us who have traveled to all those points, we can see similarities in music, food and in other subtle things. Its to be expected from a region of the world that is so old, where people have lived and influenced each others. We see such influence on culture again today as with Hollywood, all things "American" and Starbucks. I only wonder what will be the next influential culture, perhaps it's China's turn? |

Hard to tell... however there might be a couple of clues:
When the Turks arrived in the area back in the 1000ac, they were a nomadic tribe of warriors, while the Greeks-Byzantines had flourishing empire.
Music is inherent and necessary in the Christian religion and worship. It is necessary to have some musical training to become an Orthodox priest and the public is expected to take part in the melody. Muslims do not do that.
Turkish music comes directly from the Ottoman music tradition. Ottoman (alike what Turks like to claim) were not just Turks, they were also Greeks, Jews, Armenians, Serbs, Bulgarians, some Persians, Kurds etc etc. The cultural mixing off all these people produced the ottoman music. |

There are many kinds of greek music.
There is one kind of greek music with similar sounds in turkey. That music was influenced from the nations of the middle east.
Turks came to Asia Minor 500 years ago. They came without a culture and an alphabet. They took everything from the great civilizations that they enslaved.
They took religion, alphabet, music, architecture from the Arabs, the Greeks, the Armenians, the Kurds and many more. |

Why turks trie so hard to look like westerners. Efven tough they stole the greec alphabets the sound of each word is still has arabic meaning! Why can not you just accept the fact that you are muslim and speak arab. By switching yoru alphabets to greec alphabets and by censoring your history of Ataturk adn killing and geneciding so many armenians and greecs, does not make you any much more european. For the last 18 years you are trying so hard to join european community, I say it becasue I am european but can not stand seeing so many turks pretending adn forcing the whole world to beleive some thing they are not? WHy do not you stop pretending and acting like what you really ar ean not what you pretend and dream to be. After the wars in middle east and because of Bush, Turkey became a booming contry but what will happen when Bush is no longer in power nad the war will stop in Iraq! I ind DUbai and other countries to be the best even better then DUbai. I am so sick of all those Turks trying so hard to be such european. You are in Asia, you are asians with arab Arts musics and languages, that is who you are in reality! |
