I love Russia too, although I'm not Russian. It's beautiful and I love their culture.

But that said, how many civilisations in the world weren't built by some kind of slaves? Think about how the great wall of China was built. It was their own people too. It's brutal but there's nothing you can do about it. And besides, back then many rulers were too preoccupied with trying to build up their empires to feel guilty for each life sacrificed in the process. I'm not saying it's right, but they didn't have machines which could've been used in place of human beings. Just be thankful that most countries don't do it now, and appreciate the sacrifices made by our ancestors to build up the nations.

*It wouldn't be a fair comparison if you limit it to advanced european nations. It seems to hint at some degree of racism. I may be oversensitive of course, but that's what it looks like. There are many other countries outside 'advanced European nations' which are every bit as developed and civilised. I'm Chinese but live outside China, and I see no reason why, if we're doing a comparison, to limit it like that. If you go back to the very beginning, didn't all nations start similarly before developing their own cultural identity? And honestly, China is about as close to Russia geographically as you can get. I'm not one to favour a nation over another, I don't believe in that.

Civilization as we know it today was built on blood and violence. What are you gonna do about it? And I'd suggest looking at your own crimes before pointing your blood-stained finger at other countries.

Are you aware of the fact that St. Petersburg was built more than 200 years before the bolsheviks came to power? I'm not saying they were all cute and fluffy, but it's rather dumb to accuse them of this particular atrocity.

Yeah, nothing compared to the 50, 000, 000 Africans that was the bases for the entire United States.

Dude, stop the hysterics, don't make me laugh.
I suspect that the USA and the European countries were built by the elves and fairies. And when you were dragging slaves from Africa the only reason for it was bringing them to the NEW Beautiful World. And when you locked what was left of the Native Americans in the reservations you just wanted to make the better reservation. You were such philanthropists!
Before you start to accuse anyone - look at yourself!

Edit:
No need to feel sorry for us, We can take care of ourselves on ourown.

most of famous railway lines all around the world have been built on thousands of casulaties - french railways in Africa were built on black slavery, but also white soldiers and under-officers -

The same for the french railway line Hanoi - Peking -

The same for Versailles which formarly was a big area of moors - Versailles has killed thousands of people coming from villages around . The main factor of death was malaria -

etc .

Time travler
Yes it does show brutality. Also remember that this world has used slaves since the beginning of time, including many times in the bible. Does this make it right. NO! thank God we don't use slaves here anymore, but a long time ago it was a different society. It still doesn't make it any easier though.

Spot On Old Chap!
Unfortunately yes it does show brutality, however, many America foundations that still stand today are built on top of the hard working bodies who were once again unfortuantely forced to carry out such laborous tasks. But you might want to remember that slavery has been around since the beginning of time, not only in Russia, and the way you stated your question it gives off a tone that Russia is a slave-laboring country, and not many people appreciate that.

Many Tzars of Russia were cruel indeed (though, generally speaking, I don't think the average czar was as cruel as the average Ottoman or Moroccan sultan, for instance). The first to be declared as a czar of Russia was Ivan the Terrible, he was terrible indeed, but Russian nobles made him their ruler because they preferred the main prince in Russian states to unite the Russian nation and save it from oppression under it enemies. After wars of aggression, fought against Russia bu Napoleon the First, Napoleon the Third, Queen Victoria and other war mongers, it is no wonder that there wasn't so much money to improve living conditions of the Russian soldier in the field, which was the cause of the Bolshevik Revolution at the end of WW1. This is unfortunate, but this is how it was. Anyway, all this prove that Russians in general are not spoiled-though they are liberal, pluralistic and progressive in their hearts and in practice-and can fight anyone who has negative thoughts and intentions against them.

Yes, it does, though in the case of St. Petersburg it was at least used for something good.

The most depressive thing is that those slaves were Russian themselves, the colonies simply didn't have enough population, besides, it seems that nobody cared anyway. Some have pointed out that many other colonial powers used slave labour as well. Now, it's not a correct comparison at all, for one important reason: they had the decency not to use their own kind as slaves. It's strange that you can't see the difference between the two types of slavery and the impact they had on the way citizens are treated in modernity.

I don't see any reason why we shouldn't acknowledge this problem, it shouldn't be a matter of pride.

P.S. I'm comparing it to other advanced European nations, of course, it's pointless and unproductive to compare the Russians to Mayans, the Chinese, Egyptians, Turks, etc.
