Guys, guys except Trotsky versus Kerensky, none of you have any idea what was going on in Greece after the end of WWII. The KKE(communists) were very strong and well armed. If the British forces didn't help, then Greece would be Communist as well. The fierce battles took four years before the pro-communist forces lost. After that they all run (with their families as well) to the Communist countries like Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Bulgaria to start a new life in there. It was a massive exodus in 1949-1950.

churchill intervened. he also acted against the advice of his advisors. I have spoken to a british man who was present at the meetings and acted as an interpreter. It is a pity really, because now greece has a very active communist party at a time when most of the balkans and the rest of the world recognise that Communism in its pure form is deeply flawed. Greece has never got it out of its system and most of the society is tinged with a regret that it was never allowed to replay the debt it owed to the Communist guerillas who effectively liberated Greece from the German occupation.

I agree with Trotsky vs. Kerensky again. Was just going to write something like that, but then I read his/her answer and it basically covers it all. I have to say I agree with most of his/her answers and I admire his/her knowing of history.

By the way, I wouldn't exactly call Greece "eastern Europe", but rather "southern Europe" or even better, south-eastern Europe.

Because it was agreed between Soviet Union and Britain that Britain would have 90% predominance in Greece. The powerful ELAS movement was crushed by the British Army. I have always wondered why Stalin assented to a true free election in Greece, but not in any other Eastern European country. Maybe it's because of the British insistence, after all the Brits had 50% predominance in Hungary, and the rest of Eastern Europe, (especially Rumania and Bulgaria) was more or less controlled by Stalin. Liberal Western Europe had to have some sort of buffer zone before all those politically hostile communist countries.

after second world war big powers share the world and they agree that Russia could be influence east Europe expect of Greece. Greeks communist who have the support of Russians during the second world war were disappointing and they begun civil war... but they were alone and big powers(USA.UK and Russia) supported the army.. but we must note that the majority of Greeks after the second world war wanted the communism especially at north Greece.

i been told not to rant on by the yahoo team..so i wont ..but hey.. WHY would any one still seek a communistic goverment is beyond me when clearly it has failed to deliver in europe.. europeans wont stand for it,,let alone just the greeks...any way...it has been said that greece is the KEY IN TO EUROPE AND OUT OF EUROPE any one who posess greece is a winner.....guess what ...WE GREEKS STILL OWN GREECE..guess that makes us a WINNER not a loser..

kop_89
Well for one Greece is in SOUTHERN eastern Europe. Maybe they were far too clever for that. And plus, Dictatorship was in style during communists' hype.

What I have read some years ago is that the three big leaders of the time (Stalin, Churchill and Roosevelt) split Europe and when it came to Greece they exchanged it with Romania. I also saw a documentary where it seems that it all happened at the last moment, that originally it was agreed that Greece would be under communist influence and then they changed it.
Have a look at :
