Ha, ha, I was cycling yesterday in the rain and asked myself the same question. The weather is awfull. Summer sometimes is on a wednesday I have to work and then autumn comes in.

However, there are pros;
- The people have built this land with dams and won it from the sea. They had to work together. That made they had to compromise and look for practical solutions. It made it a country of liberal thinkers.
- It has an open economy. It prospers and has reasonable social welfare, compared with other countries.
- It has a reasonable stable culture, many people speak English and German. People are direct and many times blunt, but you know what they think. If they say yes, they mean yes.

Maybe I am not the right one to answer this question. I live here, but have not chosen to live here. Maybe more a question for expats?

There are many reasons, aside from the typical weed and hookers argument. Some of these are:
The Netherlands is one of the most tolerant, free societies I have experienced (and I've experienced many).
The people are some of the most literate and multilingual and it has been one of the hubs of commerce for centuries.
The multinational population means every culinary tradition is available readily, if you enjoy good food.
The weather is no worse than some parts of the Pacific Northwest or other parts of northern Europe, so that's not a real detractor.
It's centrally located with great train service to everywhere in Europe and Schipol Airport serves the World.

You actually created an account to ask this question!

Well 16.5 million people seem to find it a good enough country to live in, and many (tens/hundreds of) thousands more would like to!

A democracy, westernised country, properous economy, high standard of living, health, policing, education, clear laws, good people, food, housing etc etc...... well ok I could go on and on if I understood the point of the question and you would have narrowed the scope down a little more

It would be easier to ask why would someone not want to live there - granted the weather is not a plus, but you get used to it!

I lived there very happily for six years. I moved because my other half is Dutch and I wanted to be with him, I learned the language and set up a life there.

There's so much culturally, music, the arts, theatre, performance, history, sports .... really, there's something to do and see everywhere you go there. It's a really interesting country. Do a little research and see what's on offer there.

honestly I wouldn't know! I'm from the Netherlands and neither I know why I still remail here! (well I do have an important reason, my kids) but still hope to move out as soon as they are grown up!

(^-^)
haha i know what you mean :]
crappy weather, and nothing to do when it's crappy weather. That's the problem i have atleast... But it's still a beautiful country when it's sunny. :D

Well, that's a good question.. I live here, in the Netherlands and I hate it! Not because of the weather or the people or anything, I just don't like it at all.
