People are giving opinions on places they clearly haven't visited. Eastern Europe is full of culture, history, beautiful places and people. Yes, some parts are grim, but the same can be said about regions in every single European country.
I would take a week in Bosnia over Bradford any day! |

Reading the replies I was sitting almost with my mouth open! Ignorance is a very dangerous thing!
Yes of course there are places which people don't like but this is subjective. However first-hand knowledge is irreplaceable and I sense there is not much first-hand knowledge in some of the above replies! (only opinions, stereotypes and generalisations)
If you want to see Europe, well then firstly to see it all, it would take far longer than the Schengen visa or Visa Waiver Program of 180 days would allow. Therefore start reading up, and asking questions is always a good way (although personally I find this a question with a very negative context).
Somethings mentioned are true -e.g. Western Europe being more expensive than Eastern, but if you want to "see" Europe, then pick a mix of places.
Especially for the user "Katie" - I visit Bosnia 1 or 2 times a year and I can assure you that is is not "sketchy, rough or war-infested"! The nature is beautiful, food excellent and people very friendly indeed. True enough, it does not have 20 McDonalds every square mile or many 5* hotels with jacuzzi's and whinging pampered primadonna's staying there..... but personally I think this is a bonus!
First of all decide what you personally are interested - do you want the normal tourist sites (if so then stick to the Paris'es, London's & Amsterdam's), or something off the beaten track - (then take a punt on some of the Eastern/Central European countries)? Do you like long train journeys or hopping on/off planes (if not, then restrict how many countries you plan to visit)
The main message is - do not believe everything that is written here, go out there and learn for yourself, and then you can dispel some of the rumours for yourself
Have a nice trip |

AVOID TOURIST TRAPS!!! The tourism industry will never show you the *real* picture. You'll end up paying a lot of money for a fake, kitschy experience.
I suppose you'll be visiting EU countries. If you decide to take a trip even further, to places like Ukraine or Moldova, avoid being alone at night on the road.
But most of Europe is very safe, including the East: you may be surprised to find out the crime rate in Romania's Bucharest, for example, is much lower than in cities like Amsterdam.
Pickpocketing is somewhat more frequent. As a tourist, beware confidence tricks and only exchange money at banks and exchange offices.
I suggest making friends with locals who can show you what's really worth seeing.
The rest depends on your personal taste and how much you're willing to spend. If it's culture and history you're after, go for the capitals. If you want fun in the sun, visit the Greek islands, Croatia or the Cote d'Azur in southern France. If you want breathtaking mountain landscapes, you'll find them throughout Europe - the Swiss Alps, the Italian Dolomites, the Carpathians in Romania...
Eastern Europe is just as rich as the West of the continent, loaded with culture, tradition, great people and great landscapes. Plus, everything there is cheaper..
Read reviews and stuff like that. Websites like http://www.virtualtourist.com/ or http://www.travelblog.org/ are very useful. |

eastern europe. stick to western europe and visit the basics like italy (rome, venice, florence, naples), france (paris, nice, lyon), ireland, great britain, germany, switzerland, belgium, spain etc. |

Detroit, Washington or New Orleans for sure, oh, Europe. Haven't heard much bad stuff except in England in some area with the immigrants and also in France, rest are suppose to be safe, but remember just about everyplace has "bad places". Take care and have a safe trip. best deal would be to scope out the travel agancies online and google it. |

If your trying to save money, London is the most expensive city in the world. (although fun, is very costly)
I agree that some of the Eastern European countries are sketchy/rough/war-infested nations like Bosnia/Georgia. |
