Would Greeks like to see Istanbul (Constantinople) as part of Greece again?

The city was the center of all things Greek including their church for a thousand years. It has also been turkish for a long time and most people are now muslims there. How do Greeks see the city? Is their movements to try to annex it?

I just a read a book about the dark ages and I am curious how the city is viewed today by Greeks.

I agree with Zoi. The main thing i care about are the people. If something like that was possible it would mean that we would help practically noone as there are almost no Greeks left in Constantinople, and on the other hand kill and depart a lot (millions???) of Turks. And that for some land and stones, even if they were related to us at a time? I don't think that any Greek could do such a thing really. Megali idea (the reincarnation of Byzantium) died as an idea a long time ago at about 1922 with the destruction of Smyrna and the population movement between Greece and Turkey.

Also don't forget that our time doesn't favor big scale wars and savageries such as that. Such things can also ignite a world war easily. And the age of heroism is long gone, total annihilation can happen with just the press of some buttons. What we need is to show better understanding towards each other, and show that we use responsibly the knowledge that we acquired.

No. Though my origins are from Pontos and Asia Minor from both sides, it is practically impossible and useless such a thing to happen.
I would just like Turks to allow scientists from Greece study what has been saved from the Greek Orthodox and Byzantine Art pieces and also to rend them to other exhibitions, like Greek Museums do. I'm searching for books about the keimelien of the Orthodoxes in Turkey and I've only found an edition of 1937 that is usefull to me! (Sotiriou, Treasures of the Oic. Patriarchate in Constantinople).
In fact, I wouldn't like any change to the Greek borders (of course I wouldn't like anyone to take a piece of Greece!). We have enough space for ourselves and our kids.
EDIT
I mean, most Greeks have their homes, second homes, mother-homes etc. What are we going to do in Constantinople, are we going to take people out of their homes??? What for? Who is going to do such a thing? We don't need it! Better and HONEST relationships is what we need, in my opinion. MORE TRUST.

redrox
Why not? It's like that with every nation whose territory has changed hands.
Keyser is the last person in the known universe to scold someone about their behavior to their neighbors. Turks brought nothing but their backward ways of life and destruction wherever they went, so he'd better keep his mouth shut. You set not only your neighbors but everyone you touched at least a 100 years back in time.

It's enough to mention the Library in Alexandria, the best one the world had at the time and the damage your barbaric soldiers did to the Great Sphinx of Giza. Nothing else.
No comment? Didn't think so.

Bootlicking to your turkish masters will not make you a tad better off, zmaj. You're just a sad cautionary tale of what happens to people who sell their faith.

There will be a time when Turks will lose all the territories that they' ve got by force. There will be a free Kurdistan, a free Armenia. I think that their Giant will be cut into pieces. Or maybe they understand that there is no Turkish heritage before 1000 a.C. but there is Greek heritage.

Bojan Jankovic
It is not just about the Greeks. Serbs would like to see a christian Constantinople regain its old glory as well.

Is the pope catholic? lol at movements to try to annex it. I just want to see the Turks out of Cyprus, that would be a nice start.

Vasiliki-Βασιλική
No.
Its a dream that can not come true.
What I want is to see respecting Hagia Sofia, and not hosting fashion shows there, see the Halkis theological school open again, see the Greeks in Imvros and Tenedos not to face discrimination .....

Any Orthodox person would want it under Christian boundaries.
But sure I'm mean Constantinople is like Rome to the Italians.

No I really don't think much can be done right now in this day and age. I mean it's been a long time.

Edit Keyser: 671 B.C. to 1452 A.D Greeks, 1781 Years
Turks: 1453 A.D. Present, 556 Years
ONLY 1,225 Years to go!!!! I think I should get you a count down clock!!

Of course.
It was the capital city of the Byzantium.

many greeks maybe the majority would like to be the city again greek. in greek charachter the city is occupied now for turks.. constantinoupoli is connected with many memories.. the city maybe is as important as athens to greek civilaziation and culture.. as greek i think that this dream is stupid. it is like greeks want to take greek south italy(great greece)..

Bojan maybe you should pay attention to what your people and country have done to its neighbours before you start talking about wanting to see a far away city that has nothing to do with you, turned 'christian'.

Istanbul isnt closed of,everything is open to anyone who wants to see the history of the city. There will become a time when the turkish history outdates the greek history and you wont be able to use the cheap 'its ours; argument ever again.

ADD

Turks brought destruction everywhere they went? lol Name me famous cultural monuments that were destroyed in the nations turks conquered please. No? Didnt think so.

Dream on. Istanbul is Turkish, it will never be a part of Greece.

Keyser, I agree with you 100%, especially about what you said to this Serb. They should clean their own sh*t before talking about others. Look what they did to all of their neighbors (Bosnians, Croatians, Albanians etc.)

..Tolia..
Istanbul has a special place in our hearts

it was and always will remain a Symbol of Orthodoxism and Hellenism

it is really difficult to explain what we feel about this beloved and desired city..

a part of history, a part of Byzantine Empire, a part of our souls..

agrafa
My answer is YES but it's complicated to explain. I will try:
1) I hate the so called Byzantine Empire (the real name was Eastern Roman Empire) because they destroyed everything that was Greek. Their behavior, mainly driven by the christian priests, lead to the destruction of many temples, academies... the end of ancient hellenic spirit. Their behavior was even worse that that of the Turks who simply wanted to receive taxes and they didn't care about religion.
2) If someone replied to the question by saying "YES" because Konstantinopolis was previously a "Greek" city he must think again. It wasn't Greek. It was Roman. Also, if that reasoning was right then we should try to set free all the Mediterranean because it was habited by Greeks long ago.
3) I say "YES" because Turks are becoming more and more aggressive towards our country. So we need to realize that our "neighbor" is not someone who looks at his country and how to make it better. They don't care. They are like a monster that devours land. We need to WAKE UP NOW ... before it's too late.
