Would travelling to Spain be a mistake? |
I went to Spain when I was a baby and remember nothing, but my parents said the people were jerks, they eat disgusting food, and there really isn't much to do. I was considering going for college abroad and was discomforted by these things a little. |

I lived in Spain as a child and I have to say my first experience with the people was an extremely friendly person and I would consider my own fellow Americans more rude honestly...I also loved the food and the sights are beautiful. |

No, first off if you were thinking of doing study abroad you must (I HOPE!) be learning spanish, thus the best way to learn a language is to travel abroad, as for the rude people were your parents being "sterotypical americans" (stealing a definition from my french freind) and screaming very loudly at people in english..maybe it was THEM that were the jerks, and the food...it's a different country, of course they're going to eat different things then what you're used to it doens't mean it was disgusting! Last...there's ALWAYS somethign to do if you look for it! |

If your parents had such a bad experience, it would be difficult to tell you of the wonderful things there are to see and do and eat there!
I would suggest that you take a trip there to see what is available before you decide to go there for college. There are many fine travel guides available to help you. Why don't you pick up Rick Steves book on Spain, or Europe through the back door. He gives some absolutely wonderful guidelines for traveling in all of Europe, but he doesn't leave anything out.
Spain is full of incredible historic places. The people, I found to be absolutely wonderful and full of life and music. The food is wonderful. Tapas are small servings of food that are served in bars everywhere. It is possible to make an entire meal just from these small offerings. Bull Fighting is really an old and very celebrated tradition, go to the Prada Museum in Madrid, and go see some of the architecture of the Moors. They left an indellible mark on the countryside.
Anyway, don't let the bad experiences of your parents destroy it for you. Make your own memories.
Good Luck with this. Italy, France, Germany, Austria, etc. are also full of wonderful places to see and people to meet and food to enjoy. |

Depends which city. On the whole though Spain is a great country, the food is wonderful, and the people are really friendly. I guess your parents had a bad experience. Or is it that they just don't want you to go so far away? Good luck anyway. |

no way, its one of the best countries in Europe to visit..The Spanish are always friendly and like to party.....
If I took my parents advice on food, I would never have left home and would still be eating my steak welldone..When I cook for them these days I always get the turnedup nose initially, but then they actually enjoy the meal once they get their head around eating something different...life is for living, get your own experiences and enjoy it.. |

Well thats YOUR parents OPINIONS! Not yours, and not mine. My husbands uncle and grandma went, they loved the food and the people and the culture. I can not wait to go someday. I say go for it, how will YOU know if you like it. You are not your parents, and your opinions are not the same. Have these life experiences on your own. But travel safely!! And think about it from Spanish peoples point of view. Their lovely food, they are rude to crazy americans (or whatever country your parents were from) and do you think the people in spain are bored every day? no! So there is obviously something to do. So I think you should go!! |

Never been there but I'd love to go. Maybe it was your parents that made the whole experience terrible with a bad (and pretty American) attitude. I don't know, I'm sure your parents are great but there might have been a culture clash, the culture down there is a bit different after all.
Do some research first but don't let your parents stop you if you want to go! |
