Yes she told you correct, the public universities are almost free. Each faculty charges the students with an almost symbolic fee per year, like 200-300 $ or for medical and dental faculties about 500-600 $ worth of TL. This is mostly like a donation for the universities small expenses.

Although this is the case, one has to bear in mind that the students who want to have a University education has to take a major exam (University entrance exam) country-wide in order to be eligible for the education and note that this exam isn't one bit easy. Only approximately 1/4th of the students who take the exam gets to go a University.

all civilized countries offer FREE education.

That's what happens when people's taxes are directed to societal institutions rather than Haliburton.

Yes, public universities are free. For me it's weird to give thousands of dollars to get a university education.

Actually we pay a little money. The government provides a bank loan to the students if wanted. If you don't want to get a bank loan, you pay the money. The amount depends on the section you study, however, it's about 100 - 300$. 2 years after the graduation, we begin to refund the loan. For example as a bachelor alum, my total debt is about 850$..

gugu
Yes, that's true.
That's why there are millions of university graduates in Turkey.
Even the taxi drivers......
: )
Generally speaking, in Turkey after high school, not going to university is not even an option for the majority.
But the point is, hell, we need plumbers, too!!!!!
I want to warn people not to get surprised when (soon) we need "guest workers" from, I don't know...Germany.
Lol

Edit to La Vie...: People who are not actually living in Turkey or who are not studying in Turkish universities cannot give accurate answers about this subject. What debts? What is the relevance? The asker asked a very simple question, if you know the answer then answer, if you don't, which apparently you don't, kasma o zaman

amada
Government universities are almost free of charge, but there are some private universities that you have to pay a lot.

Yes that's true but there are also private colleges that you pay to attend to.

It seems strange to me that parents have to suffer like crazy to be able tos send their kids to a community college.Government schools are for people who dont have money to pay for a private school.. I dont know why the way things should be seems strange to you...

Wow thats awesome, but the country is losing out economically. I mean in Australia international students are a major source of revenue. Just in the financial year ending 2007, the govt received 11.3 billion dollars. Idk, free education is good for the citizens, but Turkey also has a huge mama of a debt to pay too.
