First and foremost is that the French system of universal health insurance in far better than the socialized medicine provided by the NHS in the UK. The French have freedom of choice in selecting a physician, do not face the endless waiting lists of the NHS, and receive a much higher quality of care than do the British.

While, at the highest levels, the food available in the UK has improved immeasurably in the last few decades, the average standard of cooking in France remains far above that in the UK. The English are still eating chip butty sandwiches and baked beans on toast, two items, among many, from the English kitchen, that no one who values his taste buds should be forced to eat.

The weather in the UK is considerably worse than in France and, at least in my personal opinion, often seems gloomy and oppressive. In fact, even the same weather often seems better when its experienced in France. Rain in London in depressing but the same rain in Paris makes the city seem to glow.

The social culture of France also seems better to me. Binge drinking yobs and soccer hooligans seem to typify the British these days while students arguing about existentialism over a glass of wine is what I picture when I think of France. (and yes, I realize both these things are exaggerated stereotypes).

France was ranked second in a survey on quality of life recently, beating eight other European countries including Britain and Ireland.

The study, compiled by price comparison website USwitch.com assessed 19 factors affecting quality of life, ranging from income and working conditions to healthcare, education and cost of living.

Spain just pipped France to the top spot, despite having the lowest average income (around 16,800 euros), since low taxation and cheaper essential goods brought the cost of living down overall.

Britain and Ireland trailed at the bottom of the chart due to sky high prices for fuel, food and other essentials and the shortest holidays. They also had the highest retirement ages (64.1 years Ireland and 63.2 years in Britain).

France was found to have the longest holidays in Europe at 40 days, as well as the second lowest retirement age at 58.9 years, just later than the Polish, who retire at 58.4 years on average.

Umm, well France stood up for itself by not allying with the US during the Iraq invasion.

During the credit crisis, France was hit far less than England due to it's strict credit policies.

According to a survey published recently in a British newspaper, 63% of the English people would have prefer to born in France.

I think it's a good point.

i have lived in France since 1997 and find the standard of living and quality of life far superior.the health system is much better ( phone the doctor and get a same day appointment and be seen on time) no disputes about postal areas choose your own doctor.complete absents of out of control hoodies in fact teens show utmost respect for their elders.retaurants better and cheaper.the only problem at the moment is the british governments refusal to join the euro prefering to hang on to the pound until ''the time is right'' and judging by the cries coming from across the channel that time should have been before the pound went into freefall.Vive la France

just some figures to confirm what rillifan said :
number of Brits in France in 1990 : 50 000 and in 2006..... 500 000 !
In Dordogne they represent 1% of the population.
Number of French in UK in 2007 : 107 000.....

here's also a link that shows that the reason N°1 is the price of the real estate that attract most of them : http://translate.google.fr/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.anglaisimmobilier.com%2F&sl=fr&tl=en&hl=fr&ie=UTF-8

The best (safest) arguments will be the ones about the weather. France has better weather than England. It's a fact.

It's harder and harder to say that life in France is pleasant. Wages are dwindling; taxes and regulations on all things justified by green activism are on the rise; and access to the social ladder is based upon inheritance and/or political correctness. No connections or no influential father means no job.

You are going to have a hard time demonstrating that life is better in France than in England, I'm affraid...

Bon courage!
