Go by ferry - Dover Calais, Newhaven Dieppe, Portsmouth Cherbourg and then travel on to the rest of france by train - cheap and a great way to travel.
I would recommend the towns and cities of Aix en Provence, Marseilles, Montpellier, Lyon, Nantes, Arles, Le Mans, Angers, Dieppe in fact anywhere.

Try go-today.com, trips to Paris from $599 includes air fare & hotel. This, of course leaves from the U.S I've used them many times & have had great trips, including a wonderful week in Paris.
If you're not in the U.S. someone else may be able to help
