if she is coming from france, then why would you buy something french for her? she could easily get something better when she gets back home! give her something american (or from wherever you live), like a mini landmark or a christmas tree ornament. many stores have tourist souvenirs during the summer months.
i was just a host student in france, and i bought my french family new hampshire sweatshirts, stationary, shot glasses with different nh scenes, and red sox baseball caps. in return i got chanel perfume.

Get a cute accessorie. Like an eiffel tower, or sumthing like that. Maybe a necklace or bracelet. Something she can wear or see everyday.

the people above me have suggested an eiffel tower and that is a good idea but I do not suggest you buy it right under the eiffel tower because then it is soooo expensive... the more you distance yourself from the eiffel tower, the cheaper they are... go to any souvenir store that is not in the Champ de Mars (were the eiffel tower is) and that way you can buy a bigger one at a reasonable price!

Perfume should be ok. Try to find one with French connection; some big names have fragrances for young people (Chanel 19, Dior Mademoiselle).
If she is RETURNING to France, you might buy her a nice poster with an American flavour, (I am thinking of these paintings by Matisse - La Dance - which are in Philadelphia).
