Any great hotels in Paris that don't cost a fortune?

I am taking my sister to Paris in mid December for 5 days. We need two single rooms.

From the map, it appears that the Lourve or Notre Dame area is just about the most centralized.

I want a nice, comfortable hotel that has some charm. I would rather not stay in some Holiday Inn or Best Western chain. It kind of spoils the allure of France.

On the other hand, "charming" should not include tiny beds with worn out mattresses and lumpy pillows.

The ideal hotel would be under $170 a night, have a decent restaurant, and large beds. Neither one of us likes those ridiculously narrow European style twin beds, even if two are pushed together.

I've been to Paris once, and if I recall correctly, I stayed in the St. Germain area, perhaps a five minute walk to Notre Dame. It was a good area.

Lastly, besides the major tourist attractions, can you recommend any good sites to see? We would also like to see a show, perhaps at the Moulin Rouge.

Bonjour2007
Hi there,

I recently stayed in the Hotel St Andre des Arts, very central, and right in the heart of St Michel.

I paid 90 Euro for a single room [which had a double bed].

The beauty of staying in Paris is that there are hundreds of restaurants outside your hotel door, so you don't need to find a hotel which has a restaurant. The Hotel St Andre des Arts had restaurants next door and across the one-lane road, and also many more within just 5 minutes of walking, from creperies to Italian to French and even an Irish pub. You can read my own review here on my website if you like:

Another place I use to book hotels in Paris is

http://www.Paris35.com

This has hotel and apartments starting from 35 Euro per night, depending on the season.

Hope this helps!

Cheers
Bonjour2007

These hotels abund in Paris. You will find a list of really charming hotels on this website:
http://www.guidesdecharme.com/fr/

Just enter "Paris" in the top right. Then you will find hotels in all price ranges but a lot will be under 120€ ($170).
You can trust this website for their selection of places.

I agree with your choice of location. Choose the 5th and 6th arrondissements (zip codes 75005 and 75006). On the right bank, the 4th arrondissement is also great, just on the other side of Notre Dame.

As for the Moulin Rouge, well, it's up to you personally I find this kind of show really cheezy and it is incredible expensive!

Hotels under $170 a night are not at all uncommon but whether they will have beds that meet your requirments or have their own restaurant (why would you want such a thing in Paris?) is another matter entirely.
