Anyone know of a dangerous wasp in France?

We have had a number of v.large brown wasps in our garden. They're brown with faint black markings and v.large green eyes. We've been told to avoid these as their sting can be fatal! We get the usual bees and wasps as well as the large, scarlet backed, hornets and even funnel web spiders but can anyone confirm whether these others are really that dangerous?
Thanks

Any wasp or bee sting can be dangerous if you are attacked by many of them but there's no bee or wasp in France with the power to kill with a single sting.
The very large wasps (three times the size of honey bees) are called frelons (hornet). This is an urban legend that they can kill, unless you are allergic to them of course as their venom is less powerful than a bee's venom. Those are the only wasps with that reputation in France.

What you seem to be describing is the black honey bee, though the green eyes defeat me.

All wasps (black and yellow) are quite dangerous. it hurts a little bit when they sting you but it will dissapear quite fast, but sometimes they sting where they should'nt and you can have big problems, but it doesn't happen often. the big ones called "frelon" are much more dangerous. so try to take it easy and be cool when one is turning around you. just let it go. if your garden is infested call the 18 (firemens) and they will give you the phonenumber of a society to get rid of wasps.
But if it's bees (black and brown), they are much less dangerous than wasps, but stay cool too, and don't kill them please.

Hibee
I think we would have heard about this.

I don't know, but I can tell you that the European yellow jackets (that do exist in France) can be dangerous as the brown wasps.

Like the brown wasps, some people are so, so sensitive to yellow jacket stings that one sting can also kill them.

Rowan
Terry the wasp, he's a killer.
