Anyone visited the Palace of Versailles? What is it like?

My friend is going to Paris and seeing that as a side trip. One person told her to go, one said not to because she's going the beginning of March so the gardens and fountains will be closed.

It is still worth the trip. It is only about a half hour train ride outside Paris. The gardens and fountains are spectacular, but so is Marie Antoinettes bedroom, the Hall of Mirrors, King Louis' bedroom and all the paintings and furnishings as well as the building itself. Definitely GO!

The gardens and fountains will not be closed because it's March. Your friend may have gone there when they were doing renovation work.

She can go to http://www.chateauversailles.fr/en/ - there is an English version if she doesn't speak French - and will be able to find out what is open and what isn't.

The gardens will have tulips and other early Spring flowers.

It's definitely worth a trip - it only takes about 20 minutes on the train. It's a 10-15 minute walk from the train station to the main entrance. There are also bus tours that she can take. Most of them depart from the area around the Louvre, on the Rue de Rivoli.

I was fascinated with it the first time but was a bit turned off the second and third time around because of the indulgence in excesses by the royal family displayed there. Still worth a visit for most first-timers!

Definitely worths a visit. See website for photos. Gardens are not closed, but fountains only operate from time to time, i don't know if they are renovated.
