I can only answer the question from my own point of view and experience.

I'd say YES, 'cause I'm just open-minded, friendly and I really like speaking with Americans.
I'm so curious about your culture, country .... and I'm as happy to share words with you in French or in English.
Most of the time the conversation turns into English to be a bit more "fluent" (depends on the level of French). I'm so fond of ethnology and cultural misunderstandings .....

You can also have to deal with French people who don't know a word of an other language but French, in that case, they might seem cold too, just because they have problems to understand you and know there's no other way for us to communicate with you !

But I must admit that some French people tend to be really stubborn on their point of view of Americans. Just people too proud and narrow minded, in one word : stupid !

And unluckily, like everywhere around the world, there are stupid people in France too !! ;-)

Jessica
Whenever I've traveled to France, I've found the french people to be quite kind.

If you're RESPECTFUL, you will have no problem. Time and time again, I've seen people that are too loud, too impatient, and just plain rude. The French are different from Americans. Being boisterous and demanding isn't going to fly. Asking for thing nicely will get you a long way.

Don't worry about how much french you speak. I'm so-so and 7 times of out 10, I would greet someone in french only to have them respond in english.

What it comes down to, like every other place in the world, if you're going to be a jerk, you're going to be treated like a jerk.

Hope you have a fun trip. France is one of my favorite places on the planet.

Hold on... Hold on...
Let a french answer this question :-)
- I think it is not good to make a generality. I think as someone wrote it is the same everywhere, if you are respectful to people then they will be respectful to you. It is always a question of manner. Lots of anglosaxon people dont understand why french people dont speak english, why should we?... So if you make some efforts to say Bonjour, or Merci, then they will be very friendly. but dont worry, even if you dont know any words, they will be nice still. but true, it is the same as everywhere, you always find stupid french who dont like people.
On the other side, i dont know why americans think that french dont like americans, I am not sure it is true, on one side there is politics, and we can have a different view, but on the other side you have culture, and I think generally speaking french do like americans, because we have the same occidental culture. So you are welcome to France if you want to visit our beautiful country. We have quite a large community of americans in France, and I think they are happy to live with us :-)
Don t forget the independance of USA with the help of the frenchies :-)
Au revoir

Taylor
While in Paris I found that speaking just a little bit of general French helped a lot. I think they appreciate the effort. And some even taught me a few new words.

Emeraude E
I agree with bibounet0... I think it is just a stereotype about French people. But if you make an effort we are all very nice, especially in the country side.

We like our country and I am proud to be French.

Any tourist is welcome to France but he has to be respectful... that's all!

wizzie
Hi,
I always appreciate when a foreigner strives to speak in my tongue. I perfectly know it can be very hard. And if I have to speak English to make things easier, no problem!

big bad momma
they usually will speak to someone in their own language, but others they might appear cold until you get to known them

it is always the same where ever you go there is jerks and nice ones, you just have to find the right person.

Easy A
Usually though sometime you get the occasional personality who is unforgiving.... it can get very frustrating when you are trying to appease the natives as a foreign traveler but you can get the right article correct- is it un table? une table? la table? le table? and all the while the french person knows you are talking about the table but yet, they look at you as if you are talking about the sky or the something completely insane.

Othewise, I would say most folks are friendly towards us "stupid" french speaking Americans.

Gigi & Tino
I've never had an problems with people being un-friendly. As long as you are trying and not being obnoxious you should have a lovely experience.

Not from what I hear. I hear the french hate us americans! And they CAN tell if you are an american even if your speaking french, because we don't have that accent like they do!
