Are the Alps worth going to as a day trip from Paris? |
I'll be spending about 6 days in paris in early October and I've heard that the Alps are pretty beautiful. I'm wondering if the Alps are close enough for a day trip and how convenient it is to get there. Being early October I'm also concerned about how cold or snowy the conditions might get at the Alps. |

Only an American would ask such a question (don't mean it in a negative way but you guys have no notion of distance when it comes to traveling in Europe)... It will take a minimum of 6 to 8 hours driving or riding a train from Paris to the Alps... so you do the math... Is seeing a Mountain worth a 12 to 16 hour trip just for a few hours? This said, if you choose to go, enjoy! |

even six days is not enough for paris

yeah, um it takes about 6 hours to get form Paris to the Alps. so it wouldn't work to go there for the day. |

Way too far for a day trip! And where in the Alps anyway? The Alps span across parts of France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany and Italy. So, you'd have to pick a particular place, like Chamonix, for example. I think the Alps are best experienced by spending several days in the region. Taking a hike or two and visiting different villages. Just taking the train to the mountains for a day and walking through a village and buying a cheesy souvenir isn't worth your limited amount of time. The draw of the Alps is the outdoor recreation options...hang gliding, biking, hiking skiing etc. And, it could be quite cold in the Alps in October. You'd be better off visiting Versailles (but it might not be open, not sure about that) for a day or taking the Eurostar to London. |

As others have said it's way to far to do in a day from Paris, you could get the TVR to geneva but this take 4 hours, so thats your day gone. If you want to see the Alps you should take at least 3 days.
Also no snow on the Alps in October unless you see one of the really big ones like Mont Blanc. Enjoy whatever you do. |
