Best Parisian markets/ bakeries areas? |
American tour guide Rick Steves is always raving about this Rue Cler area. From a Parisian's point of view, is this really all that "French" with the best bakeries and shops? Is it very expensive compared to other open markets? Can anyone recommend a better one? We're staying near the Louvre. Thanks |

I've never thought much of Rick Steves and his fervor for the Rue Cler area has always mystified me.
If you'd like to see a great street market then try the one of the rue Buci in the 6th or the rue Mouffetard in the 5th. |

I wonder why you specifically asked for bakeries? :) well, for perhaps the best boulangeries in Paris, you should try:
Gosselin in rue St.-Honore it's right about your area (RER:Louvre-Rivoli). He makes excellent french bread and sweets.
Lionel Poilane in rue du Cherche-Midi (RER: Saint-Sulpice) for sandwiches
Rene -Gerard de St-Ouen makes pretty sandwiches and pastries
Bon appetit! |

Hi there Ransomed,
I've just written a page on my website about Paris markets - this shows lots of types of markets and where they're located:
http://www.a-night-in-paris.com/paris-market.html
Paris is so easy to get around, everything is less than 30 mins away by public transport, so from the Louvre you won't have far to go to find something interesting.
I hope this helps - enjoy your visit!!

I prefer the market on rue Montorgueil, and it is probably closer to where you're staying that rue Mouffetard. I never compared prices, so I don't know how to answer the question about whether prices are different.
There's a bakery near the G20 supermarket in the Beaubourg area. I could give you directions from the apartment where I stayed, but I don't know the street name.
You could visit La Duree (or maybe Doree). The daughter of a friend did an internship there and talked about how wonderful everything was. |
