Hi,I live in france and after 20 years here I would recommend in provence: l'isle sur sorgue, vence,(inland),as for beach I think roquebrune-sur-mer is the best beach between cannes and menton-laid back, not over-crowded and easy access by train!! .Otherwise for beach going towards spain I would say coullioure! You mentioned that you have only a few days...so I would stay in the cote d'azur as coullioure is 450km from nice and the only other scenic beach is in biarritz(atlantic coast) and unfeasible by car but there is a direct flight between nice and there every saturday(1hr...compared to 12hrs driving!!). I hope you check -out these places via the net, omegaman.

Antibes is beautiful. On the Meditteranean - close to Cannes, Nice and Monaco. Near a fantastic marine park, Lots of watersports and you can hire boats for a reasonable price.

I loved it!

I liked renting a moped from Avignon and just driving past fields of lavender, sunflowers, and pears, I rode to St. Remy de Provence, an old and small village, to Arles, which was nice, and to see Les Baux (cave dwellings high up on a rocky mount). You could also go see the Roman Aqueduct.
I wanted to go to Aix, but didn't have time.
Annecy is beautiful, but closer to Geneva than Avignon.
As for the Cote D'Azur I stayed in Nice and got a moped and drove along the coast both directions. Antibes is pretty and Eze had a cool beach. I also spend a day in Montpellier, which was a very nice surprise!
Next time I go I want to visit Aix, Cannes, Nimes, Cap D'Agde, Collioure, and maybe Marseille.

South of France is a vast area, but I suggest you to visit three main towns: Bordeaux, Toulouse, and Montpellier.

Bordeaux: Nice town, and lovely countryside (Wine,wine...)
Toulouse: You will fall in love with the city centre.
Montpellier: Because it is close to the Mediterranean sea, and you enjoy a very good weather.

These 3 cities are well linked, thanks to the Motorways A62 and A61.
